New Cornerback Adds Depth to Steelers Secondary
The Steelers signed cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to their practice squad on November 12th. Samuel has been out for almost a year recovering from spinal fusion surgery. He was granted medical clearance to return to football in October. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke about the decision to sign Samuel. He remarked, “It was easy for us. Dr. David Okonkwo, our team doctor, did the surgery, and so we didn’t have to go far to ask questions.”
Samuel played for the Los Angeles Chargers for four seasons. Throughout his NFL career, he has played in 50 games, starting in 47. Samuel has logged more than 3,000 defensive snaps. He’s amassed six interceptions, 37 passes defensed, and one fumble recovery.
Samuel believes that the Steelers are the right team for him. He remarked, “I’m glad I ended up here. I’m glad everything worked out to be here, and I’m blessed to be here with great coaches and great teammates.” Samuel reflected on how he felt about finally returning to the field. He said, “It meant the world to me. Just being out there, putting on a helmet, putting on cleats, going at it, competing with other guys that are trying to accomplish the same goal as me.”
The Steelers’ defense hasn’t lived up to expectations this year due to underperformance and injuries. Samuel brings experience, talent, versatility, and a dedicated work ethic to the team. He’s already impressed his teammates and coaches. Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said, “He has all the natural movements for a cornerback and fits what we do with so much single-high.”
Brandin Echols offered his thoughts on Samuel. He commented, “He's a major factor, in my opinion. I watched a lot of his films before coming to the league. He's a hell of a player, so with that I just can't wait to see him ball.”
Jalen Ramsey has known Samuel for a long time. Ramsey spoke about him. He said, “I mean, obviously, his skill on the football field is super important. Just even so, his mindset. I like the way he goes about his business and the passion he brings, and the heart he plays with. Those are things you like to have in a DB. I am happy he got added to the mix.” The familiarity between Ramsey and Samuel could help stabilize the Steelers’ secondary and bring them the consistency they need.
Samuel adds depth to the Steelers’ secondary. Analysts expect him to be elevated to the active roster in the near future. If Samuel remains healthy, he could be an asset to the team for the remainder of this season and years to come. He has the potential to become a core member of the Steelers’ defense.
