New Look Jets Team Shows Potential in Loss to Pittsburgh

NFL

Today marked a brand new NFL season for the New York Jets, and the first season under new head coach Aaron Glenn. The starters shone throughout the preseason, but it was the first time that the team made its way to MetLife Stadium for a start. Despite leading early, the Jets ultimately had their first loss of the season, falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-32. The Jets did not get the last laugh against Aaron Rodgers, as he claimed his first opening day win in quite a few years. Here are some of the key takeaways from the loss.

Breece Hall Shined

While there were rumors that a running back could be dealt in the offseason, Breece Hall showed why he belongs on the Jets this season. After struggling last season, Hall had an over-100-yard performance, capped with a touchdown. Hall’s great day showed why the Jets are going to focus on a run-heavy offense this season. Braelon Allen also showed his strengths, but he did cost the team during a failed two-point conversion.

Justin Fields Dominated

In his season debut with the Jets, Justin Fields created opportunities that Jets fans haven’t seen from a quarterback in years. The run-heavy offense was a great aspect of the game, and Fields was a huge part of this. Fields ran in for two touchdowns and rushed for 48 total yards. His passing game has room to improve as the season continues, but he was able to throw for one touchdown and 218 yards.

Defensive Struggles

While the offense did shine, the defense put up a lackluster effort. The secondary, including Sauce Gardner, fell victim to giving up four touchdown passes from Rodgers. While they certainly have time to improve, these were not numbers that Rodgers was able to put up last season with the Jets. In addition, the defensive penalties are something that needs to be addressed, especially since this was such a common theme last season.

Brutal Last Few Drives

While the offense had a great game, the game is certainly tainted by the last few drives. Xavier Gipson’s fumble essentially cost the Jets the game, allowing Pittsburgh to score twice in 50 seconds. The last drive was also not the best for the Jets, where the team went three-and-out without much of a fight. While the offense showed growth since last season and proved that they can be competitive, it’s hard to look over the last drives and remain hopeful.
