New-Look Rangers Face Bruins in 26-27 Season Opener
After a long Summer of changes, the 26-27 NHL season officially begins tomorrow night. The New York Rangers enter the season looking to bounce back after a horrific year last season, which led them to reshape their roster significantly. Though the odds aren’t in their favor this season, simple numbers don’t affect what the team does on the ice, and these Blueshirts are confident they can prove many fans wrong. The Rangers' bounce-back campaign kicks off tomorrow night as they head to TD Garden to face off against the Boston Bruins at 8:00 p.m. EST.
After a 34-39-9 campaign, New York looks hungry this season to return to contending status. Meanwhile, Boston is coming off a 45-27-10 season that earned them a spot in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs before the Buffalo Sabres eliminated them in the first round. The Blueshirts had a much busier offseason than the Bruins, adding players like Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Sean Durzi, and Marcus Pettersson. Boston, meanwhile, added forward JJ Peterka and looks to see more production from their newest captain, David Pastrňák, and Pavel Zacha.
Boston's biggest absence will no doubt be Charlie McAvoy, who is suspended for the first six regular-season games for slashing Buffalo forward Zach Benson during the postseason. McAvoy's absence puts much pressure on the Bruins' defensive depth, especially against a Rangers team looking to create more offense. New York will also be without forward Adam Sýkora, expected to miss about four to five months with a lower-body injury sustained in a preseason match against the Devils. As one of their bright spots last season, his absence could hurt his development, especially since he had a great training camp and was favored to join the Rangers on opening night.
For the Rangers, Dorofeyev will get plenty of attention in this first regular-season game. The Rangers acquired the 25-year-old after he scored 37 goals and 64 points last year, making him one of the most important additions following Artemi Panarin's departure. Igor Shesterkin will also remain critical in the net as the team continues to improve its defense in front of him. Overall, the man getting the most attention will no doubt be Albert Šmits, the fifth overall pick from the 2026 NHL Draft. After officially making the opening night roster after standing out in camp, the 18-year-old looks set to make his NHL debut against Boston.
For Boston, the main offensive threat remains to be Pastrňák. However, fans will also watch Peterka, expected to play alongside the captain and Elias Lindholm. Another big storyline is 19-year-old James Hagens, the former Boston College star who is expected to begin his NHL season with Boston after being selected seventh overall in 2025. Jeremy Swayman will once again be expected to provide Boston with the goaltending necessary to overcome McAvoy's absence, so fans can expect quite a goaltending duel to begin the season.
Plenty of uncertainty may be in Rangers fans' minds given the number of new pieces, but this matchup gives them a chance to test their revamped roster immediately. Boston has the advantage of being at TD Garden, but McAvoy's suspension takes away one of their most important defenseman. New York will try to use their new offensive weapons to create chances against Boston's reworked defense, while Shesterkin does what he does best for this Rangers team: keep them in it. Dorofeyev should be heavily involved offensively, but Pastrňák and Peterka give the Bruins a dangerous home combination. A tight game, perhaps, but a battle no doubt. Can the Bruins start their season with a win, or will the New York Rangers secure the win and set the tone for a bounce-back season?
