New York Giants Make a Defensive Statement in the First Round of the 2026 NFL Draft

NFL

The New York Football Giants took the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. With their first of two picks of the night, they chose Arvell Reese. Coming out of Ohio State, he is six-foot-four and one of the strongest linebackers, standing at 243 pounds, to come to the New York Giants. John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen could not have made a better pick. He is definitely going to make a difference in New York.

The Giants made a defensive line statement with the selection of Reese. The 20-year-old is going to give Big Blue a powerful, athletic look. He is actually changing the defensive line's look. Reese enters New York after having a breakout season at Ohio State last year. He totaled 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and six and a half sacks across 14 games. This pick is telling fans and analysts that the Giants have finally gotten serious about their rebuild this coming season.

Reese is definitely a bold swing in the rebuild, especially after having Dexter Lawrence, a big piece of the puzzle, being traded away. New York is looking to be quicker, faster, and stronger. With him working with Brian Burns this coming year, the Giants may become an unstoppable defensive line. He can attack, rush off the edge, and give New York a chess piece that they can actually play with and learn how to work with. Many praise his physical traits and impact potential.

Moving forward, like every rookie needs to, Reese still has to clean up certain areas of the way he plays before he becomes a part of the field. He will be tested more on his discipline and speed, just so that the Giants know what they need to build on with him going forward. Being a top player in college does not mean he’s already at the top of the bar, but the Giants have obviously done something fantastic to fix their team. The Giants chose identity over hype for this season.

What remains now is how the Giants will plan to use him in the coming season. Reese has high ability, but his best asset is his ability to blitz when needed. Reese also knows how to create chaos in the line of scrimmage. A player like this is someone that the Giants have been missing for a long time. The Giants have just gained something really great for the new year.
