New York Jets Embarrassed in Blowout Loss to Jacksonville Jaguars

NFL

The New York Jets never had a chance on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team was completely embarrassed in the 48-20 loss, falling to 3-11 on the year after Week 15. There wasn’t much for New York to hang their hat on going into the next game, as this is the second week in a row that they were defeated in nearly every facet of the game. After being officially eliminated from the playoff race last week, this game assured Jets fans that draft season would be starting early for New York.

Jets Defense Looks Lost

The biggest reason that the Jets were never in this game was that their defense never even gave them a chance to climb back into it. The team went down 14-0 early in the game and trailed the entire rest of the game. Trevor Lawrence looked like he could do no wrong, as he had a career-high 136.7 passer rating and threw for 330 yards. The Jets still do not have an interception through 14 games, the second-longest streak in NFL history. They had a garbage time fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, but at that point they had already given up 48 points and the game was over. There are many that will point to the fact that the team traded two of their stars and have sustained major injuries, but the fact is that  Steve Wilks’ defense, after being serviceable for a few weeks, has fallen apart again.

Brady Cook Struggles in Debut

The Jets’ undrafted rookie quarterback unfortunately looked the part against the Jaguars’ opportunistic defense. After a promising touchdown drive to make it a one-score game in the first quarter, Brady Cook unravelled, throwing three interceptions in the failed comeback attempt. Cook finished the day with 176 yards and a 52.1 passer rating. While he was playing from behind for the entire game due to the aforementioned defensive struggles, his turnovers and lack of explosive plays helped dig the Jets into a deeper hole than they were already in. There are still a couple of games left for Cook to show he has potential in the NFL, but five interceptions in two games are going to put doubt in even the most staunch believers.
