New York Jets Linked to Experienced Offensive Mind

NFL

The New York Jets have been completely overhauling their entire staff over the past week or so. After firing defensive coordinator Steve Wilks before the season ended, the team decided to move on from the majority of his defensive staff as well, most likely opting to let whoever the new DC is pick his own guys. The team also moved on from quarterbacks coach Charles London and passing game coordinator Scott Turner, and on Saturday reported that they were possibly looking to strip offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand of his play calling duties. This came as a surprise to many, as despite the offense’s struggles, it seemed like Engstrand’s play calling throughout 2025 wasn’t necessarily the issue as much as the lack of talent and quarterback play were. Despite this, the Jets seem keen on hiring a new play caller, and based on early reports, there’s already a favorite for the job.

The Jets have been linked to former offensive coordinator and head coach Frank Reich. The hire would an interesting one. Reich has historically had success with the Eagles and Colts, but his last NFL stint with the Carolina Panthers was an unmitigated disaster and he was fired before season’s end. Some will look at his work with Carolina and automatically want to stay away from Reich, arguing he hasn’t had success in a while now after being fired twice in two years. While it’s not completely invalid, to discount all of his previous work developing quarterbacks and running successful offenses.

The Jets don’t have competent quarterback play, but Reich survived with the Colts for years with no sustainable option at the position. People will point to him failing to develop Bryce Young, but many will fail to mention that current Panthers head coach Dave Canalas also benched Young during his first season there. Young needed time to develop, and Reich’s system just didn’t fit him. When he was fired from Indianapolis, he was dealing with a Matt Ryan who couldn’t move the ball well at all and ended up retiring after the season.

The Jets may not be the most attractive destination based on current talent on the offensive side, but they have pieces to work with. When Reich had the most success in Indianapolis and Philidelphia, it was when the offensive line was playing well. The Jets have a good offensive line already in place, which is more than a lot of teams can say. Reich’s system usually relies on the quick and short passing game. If he can get a reasonable top-32 quarterback, which the Jets did not have in 2025, the offense could have a bit of functionality in 2026.
