New York Jets Trade Nets Receiver Depth

NFL

The New York Jets are assumed to be sellers at the trade deadline. They are currently sitting at 1-7 and tied for the worst record in the league with both the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans, and there are still a few questions about their coaching staff. This, however, doesn’t mean that they won’t make any trades for some young pieces before November fourth, They showed that early in the season, making a trade for Titans’ nickel Jarvis Brownlee Jr., and have done it again Wednesday, trading away nickel Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

Carter, a Joe Douglas fifth-round pick, signed a three-year extension with the team back in 2024 following a career year that saw him performing at arguably the highest level in the league. The following year, Carter suffered multiple injuries throughout the season. He saw his play dip significantly following the departure of Robert Saleh, and continued to struggle throughout the beginning of the 2025 season as well. After the aforementioned Brownlee got into the lineup, Carter’s fate was sealed. Brownlee played significantly better than Carter the moment he stepped on the field, and Carter was quickly relegated to the bench, and eventually traded.

Metchie’s story is a bit different. He was a high draft pick, selected 44th overall to the Houston Texans in 2022. He was slotted to be the team’s wide receiver two or three on the depth chart that season before tragedy struck and he was diagnosed with cancer. Missing his rookie season due to his battle, Metchie became buried on the depth chart, and after the Texans drafted multiple receivers to replace him, they sent him to Philadelphia in August. Unfortunately, in Philly he found himself sitting behind three former first-round picks, not really allowing him much of a chance to get much playing time either. Now, he is on the Jets, and in line for the first time in his career to get legitimate playing time in a weak and injured receiver room. He had a lot of hype coming out of the draft, and New York might be the perfect place for Metchie to finally show off why. After all, New York loves a comeback story.
