Now or Never: The Moment Is Here for 'The Baddy'

UFC

The Lightweight Division is considered one of the most difficult divisions in the UFC. The talent is at its peak, and the division proves to be unforgiving time and time again. However, Paddy Pimblett has made a serious run in the division and is looking at some great opportunities in his future. The division has had recent openings at the top, and Paddy may find himself closer to the top than ever before.

The current champion of the Lightweight Division, Ilia Topuria, has recently announced that he will not be fighting in the first quarter of 2026. He cited the reasons were personal and ultimately would require him to take some time away. This makes the beginning of the year very interesting for Pimblett as he has a fight scheduled early on. He will fight Justin Gaethje at UFC 324, on January 24th, for the interim Lightweight championship. Gaethje is a tough opponent; however, he is at a late stage in his career. With many believing he does not have many fights left, Paddy may be the one to retire him. A win will also put Paddy exactly where he wants to be, and that is waiting for Topuria’s return. The two have established rivalry within the division but have yet to meet each other in the octagon. This was mostly because of Paddy still working his way up in the division, as Topuria was already at the top and champion. Now, Paddy could find himself with the interim champion belt, ready to face off with his enemy. Paddy has made a serious claim about why he should be respected as one of the top fighters in the division. He remains undefeated with notable wins against Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler. While Gaethje is a tough opponent, Paddy is much hungrier and ready to shake up the division.

While many thought Pimplett was all hype and no substance, he has shown that he has what it takes. A win against Gaethje will give him a shot at what he has been working at for some time now. With the right training and game plan, Paddy could mount as a great opponent for Topuria’s return. The future looks exciting in the Lightweight Division.
