Panthers Storm Back Behind a Breakout Performance

NFL

Rico Dowdle. Sorry, I had to get that out. Rico Dowdle. The Panthers started horribly, giving up a touchdown and more than one turnover. The team managed to turn it around, particularly the defense. The Dolphins might be the second-worst team in the league, but a win is a win. The Panthers improve to 2-3 and 2-0 at home.

Miami tight end Darren Waller got off to a hot start but was eventually slowed down by the defense. This is big, considering that the tight end position has been one of the Panthers' worst-guarded positions. Star Miami running back De’Von Achane still made his presence felt for the day, but otherwise was unable to be the usual difference maker that he is. Since getting dominated by the run in Week One, the Panthers have been phenomenal against the run behind Pro Bowler Derrick Brown and solid defensive linemen, A’Shawn Robinson and Tershawn Wharton. Second-round pick Nic Scourton played a great game. Scourton flashed the potential that the Panthers were hoping to see. The former Aggie is primed to continue having a breakout rookie season and a solid place in Carolina’s future.

The receiving core had solid showings across the board. Budding superstar Tetairoa McMillian continues to shine. There is no competition in the receiving room as far as who's number one. It is TMac, and there is a comparison. Since getting drafted, he has been reliable, and it is only a matter of time before he has an absolute monster game. In his first game back, Xavier Legette managed to score his first touchdown of the season. Legette wasn’t amazing, but the flashes of talent were on display for once. Seventh-round pick Jimmy Horn showcased what he's capable of in his first game of the season. Horn is a dynamic football player and should see increased reps moving forward.

Now for the star of the show. Rico Dowdle. With starting running back Chuba Hubbard out, Dowdle stepped up with big shoes to fill. He did not back down and exceeded every expectation. Dowdle exploded with 203 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and 28 receiving yards. The former Cowboy was a significant factor in today's comeback. Dowdle has certainly played himself into a bigger role moving forward, but the starting position should still be Hubbard’s. I could see a more 1A, 1B situation emerging in the future. Hubbard could also afford another week off with such a late bye week for the Panthers.

Despite today's win, there were still some noticeable cracks. Bryce Young was sacked three times, along with two turnovers: one back interception and another bad fumble. The Dolphins are objectively terrible, so these are not great. Good teams won’t give the Panthers as much breathing room—nonetheless, a great win at home for the Panthers. Oh ya, Rico Dowdle.
