Passing the Torch: How This Backup Veteran Is Still Important to This Rookie's Future
The New York Football Giants’ quarterback room is very much complete. They have four quarterbacks, all playing with very different styles. There has been speculation that Jameis Winston might be traded, but it appears he is staying with the Giants for a while. That said, many of the eyes during the off-season have been on both veteran QB Russell Wilson, who will start for the Giants this season, and this year's draft pick, rookie Jaxson Dart. It doesn’t leave much room for Winston and Tommy DeVito to get in on anything. Despite sitting at number two behind Wilson, Winston still plays a significant role.
In the original plans with the Giants, New York had plans to start Winston as the Giants’ lead quarterback before they brought Wilson in. Winston still gets to do a few reps during practice, but not very many. He will be taking over Wilson's spot as of next season. Wilson was signed on for a one-year contract, while Winston was brought in to do two. They want to ensure Dart has enough time to learn from each of these veterans before they put him in full-time. At the moment, Winston’s job is to help lead Dart into being the next Giants franchise quarterback.
Winston has been around since 2015 and has played under many offensive coordinators. He has experienced both highs and lows during his career. He has had great moments, such as leading the NFL in passing yards back in 2019, but he has also had downward seasons, including a 30-interception season. Having a wide range of experience like this can show Dart that there will be moments like this during his NFL career. It would be a big help to give the rookie quarterback the hard-earned lessons that he has gained and pass them on to the next generation.
Dart is already a gunslinger at heart and ready to go. He needs more guidance than planned. Winston can guide him in taking these risks. Winston can also show him when it is time to rein it in. He can also show him what happens when the ball has failed to be protected, but the upside is Winston can also explain to him that he can bounce back from those plays. It’s never easy, but something he can show this young rookie.
Winston knows what it is like and can review the film with this young rookie. He can help elevate his pre snap and understanding of different defenses that the Giants will face weekly. Each of these steps is crucial for a young rookie and veteran quarterback who has seen it all. Wilson has spent much time in the NFL and is also helping, but he is busy trying to fill the Giants' shoes as the starting quarterback.
Winston is no longer a franchise quarterback, but he knows his role. It makes him valuable as he can support Dart without causing controversy. It allows Dart the space to grow, to make those mistakes, and learn. It makes it better for him to know that this veteran isn’t competing with him to try and take the job away, but he should know that he is helping him. The bottom line is Winston is just more than a backup. He is a confidence builder and a prep coach for Dart. If this rookie takes the time to listen to Winston, there will be no issues with him starting sooner than everyone thinks at the role of starting quarterback.
