Phillies Continue Their Home-Stand with Series Against the Boston Red Sox
The Phillies will continue their current home stand against the Boston Red Sox this week at Citizens Bank Park. As of now, the Phillies have a 1-1 record on the home-stand, with game three of the series against the Angels being played at 1:35 p.m. During the homestand, it has been the offense that has come alive. With Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper having home runs in each of the two games. Both players seem to be getting hot in a spot where the Phillies need it the most, as they face a tough Red Sox team. The team enters with a 53-47 record amid their rebuild, but looks to keep getting better. The Red Sox have a bunch of young pieces for the future, but are currently hanging in third in the AL East. The Phillies will need to take care of business at home in their pursuit of accomplishing their goals and expectations of winning a World Series.
Monday 7/21 - 6:45 p.m. EST
For the series opener, it will be Zack Wheeler for the Phillies against Walker Buehler for the Red Sox. Starting with Wheeler, he has dominated all year for the Phillies and is putting together a season worthy of winning a Cy Young. Wheeler has put himself in the conversation for the award based on his 2.36 ERA and the second-most strikeouts in the MLB with 154. The part of Wheeler’s starts that are so impressive is that he goes deep into almost every start. He is fourth in the MLB with innings pitched, and in only two out of his 19 starts, he hasn’t reached at least the sixth inning. Wheeler will look to start the tempo early for the Phillies, going against his counterpart, Buehler, who has struggled this season. In his first year in Boston, Buehler has not performed well with a 6.12 ERA, the second-worst in his career. Outside of the ERA, Buehler has earned a 6-6 record and hasn’t been able to get anything going up to this point. He will try and change that and look to upset the Phillies at home.
Tuesday 7/22 - 6:45 p.m. EST
In the second game of the series, it will be Cristopher Sánchez against Richard Fitts for the Red Sox. Like Wheeler, Sanchez is having one of the best years of his young career and has put himself in the conversation to win the Cy Young. Unlike Wheeler, however, Sanchez was snubbed out of the 2025 All-Star Game and looks to prove people wrong. This year, his counting stats come out to an 8-2 record to go along with a 2.50 ERA, which is the tenth best in the MLB. Sanchez looks to continue his hot season with the Phillies coming out of the All-Star Break against the Red Sox. As for his opponent, Fitts, his season hasn’t gone the same way that Sanchez's has. He has dealt with injuries throughout this entire season, which has led to an up-and-down season. He comes into the matchup with a 1-3 record to go along with his 4.28 ERA. Fitts will look to bounce back and pick up his second consecutive win against the Phillies on Tuesday.
Wednesday 7/23 - 7:05 p.m. EST
In the series finale, it will be Jesus Luzardo for the Phillies against Lucas Giolito for the Red Sox. Starting with Luzardo, his season has been rocky to say the least, with an amazing start, but has since cooled off. To start the year, had a perfect 5-0 record to go along with a career-best 1.95 ERA. Then, in the middle of May, his season took a turn in the complete opposite way. His ERA has since ballooned to 4.29, and his record turned into 8-5 with a 3-5 record since his perfect start. Luzardo has had solid performances during the stretch, but he has been too inconsistent. He will look to get back on track Wednesday against the Red Sox. As for his counterpart, he has been having a very solid season. He comes into the matchup with a 6-2 record to go along with a 3.59 ERA. He has had a very strong month of July with a 2-1 record and has only given up five runs throughout 20 innings of work. He will look to keep his strong month going with his performance against the Phillies.
