Position Groups with Question Marks Heading Into the Season for the Cowboys
The Cowboys this season already have positions where they feel very confident with their personnel. Quarterbacks seem to be set with Dak Prescott returning from injury and trading for Joe Milton from New England. The wide receivers are another position group that Dallas has a lot of faith in, with stars like CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens paired with solid role players such as Jonathan Mingo and Jalen Tolbert. Despite the confidence in a lot of positions across the roster, there are still questions that may arise on who may start and who will be consistent players. Dallas hopes that heading into next season, these groups can figure out who’ll be the day-one starters and use these players to bounce back from a disappointing season last year.
Linebackers
The linebacking group got revamped this offseason with the additions of Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray through free agency and trades, while also selecting Shemar James in the draft. These players will be pairing up with young talents in Dallas, like the injured Demarvion Overshown, who’ll be looking to make a return around Thanksgiving, and Marist Liufau, who showed a lot of promise in his rookie season. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, throughout his career, has been able to get the most out of linebackers at every stop he’s been to. The only sure starter is Overshown; however, with his injury, others will have to be in his place; therefore, every position is up for grabs heading into this season at linebacker.
Cornerbacks
With DaRon Bland being the only corner who is healthy heading into the season, Dallas still needs to figure out who will play elsewhere. Trevon Diggs is aiming for a Week One return, but with the Cowboys hoping not to rush him back, his return may stall. Rookie Shevon Revel, whom Dallas has high hopes for, is still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered last season in college. Other players, such as Caelen Carson, Kaiir Elam, and Andrew Booth, may have to play key roles next season because of the injuries to other players.
Running Backs
The whole running back core this season changed with the additions of Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Jayden Blue. All these players have the chance to be the starter in Week One against the Eagles; however, more than likely, Dallas will approach the backs with a committee effort. Therefore, all of them will have the chance to get starting roles depending on the week and opponent. Dallas hopes that these three will be solid throughout the season, or else they’ll be in trouble once again at running back.
