Racism Allegations Rock 2026 Sunderland vs. Newcastle Match: What Really Happened?

This Sunday's Premier League game, between Sunderland and Newcastle United, was brought to a halt during the second half. For a game to be stopped more than halfway through, something of significant magnitude must occur; medical emergencies, safety issues, or severe weather conditions can delay a match between two teams. In the last couple of years, though, racism has been another factor that has stopped Premier League games before their end. Although racism in soccer is not new, it is only recently that the Premier League devised an anti-discriminatory protocol to protect players from racist aggression. It was one of those incidents that provoked the halt in today’s encounter between Sunderland and Newcastle. Abuse from the local Newcastle crowd against Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida has led to an investigation to impose sanctions.

Sunderland, ranked 11th in the Premier League table, and Newcastle, ranked 12th, were set to play against each other in what is widely known by fans as the Tyne-Wear Derby. Both teams are fierce rivals, and their games are usually very heated. However competitive, this time things took a darker turn when Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka reached out to the referee because of Geertruida’s allegations of racial abuse from the crowd. The referee then proceeded as outlined by the Premier League’s anti-discriminatory protocol and temporarily stopped the game during the half. Not much was said about the incident itself, but after talking to the two teams’ managers, the match was restarted.

Both Sunderland and Newcastle released statements regarding the occurrences that took place today. Newcastle recognized abuse and stated that “Our stance is clear, we do not tolerate discrimination of any form. We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable”. On Sunderland’s side, this was received and endorsed: “We acknowledge Newcastle United’s statement and expect those responsible to be identified and held accountable”. The Premier League Match Centre also made a statement regarding the incident on the social media platform, X, which announced that “The incident at St. James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs.”

The game ended with a win for the Black Cats, who dominated despite the difficult circumstances. The 2-1 victory over Newcastle was certainly a bittersweet experience for Sunderland. Incidents like this one further showcase the importance of anti-discriminatory protocols and campaigns, which only became effective during the 2019-2020 season of the Premier League. Fans are as responsible as any other person to ensure that players feel safe performing inside the field and living outside of it.
