Rams Starting QB Is Back at Full Speed and So Are the Teams Hopes

NFL

After battling through an aggravated disk in his back, the Los Angeles Rams finally have their guy back. Matthew Stafford is ready to get things going just a few weeks before the season opener against the Texans. His return is more than a boost for the offense. It represents stability, leadership, and hope for a team eager to see its starting quarterback fully healthy.

Stafford Speaks on His Return

After missing most of training camp, Matthew Stafford started his press conference on a light note by joking about a paper cut he got, knowing the questions that were coming. Stafford did not get into specifics but mentioned that he pretty much did “everything under the sun” to get back on the field. Entering his 17th NFL season, the 37-year-old has been making good progress and has had no restrictions during practice. His presence allows him to build timing with his receivers, including new addition Davante Adams. Stafford admitted he feels a huge responsibility to do what is right by the team while understanding that “progress isn’t just a straight line.” With his injury history, managing and monitoring his back will remain a priority throughout the season.

McVay’s Confidence in Stafford

Head coach Sean McVay is likely breathing a sigh of relief now that his starting quarterback is back on the field. McVay did not hide his excitement, stating that Stafford has been taking full practice loads and has been a 100 percent participant, something he had not done all camp. McVay said, “That makes me feel good,” which signals confidence in Stafford’s progress. He also noted that Stafford looks sharp and is working through his progressions quickly, adding, “He looks like the stud that we know.”

McVay leaned on backups Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett during training camp, with Bennett showcasing a strong performance in both preseason games, including a dramatic game-winning drive in a preseason matchup against the Chargers. With Stafford back, McVay can now focus on Stafford and prepare for Week One. That preparation includes building chemistry between Stafford and Adams and getting his starting quarterback comfortable facing defenses again. The offensive line knows the importance of keeping Stafford upright, and as far as the defense getting physical with the quarterback, McVay noted, “They have enough respect to not be idiots.”

Stafford will need to maintain his progress to return to the high level of play fans expect. His health will play a major role in how far this team can go. If he stays on track, the Rams could find themselves back in the mix as legitimate contenders. For now, all eyes are on Week One, where Stafford has the chance to show the Rams’ hopes are truly back at full speed.
