Rangers Continue to Hang On by a Thread in Tight 2026 Al West Division
Mid-August in Arlington means scoreboard watching. In a battle of being under or at .500 on the season, the Texas Rangers are right in the thick of a tight race for the American League West crown. Yet, they’re also dangerously close to that top-ranked spot over their division rivals slipping away entirely. Trailing the Houston Astros by less than three games for the division championship, and with the Seattle Mariners breathing down their necks, the margin for error is gone. For a franchise so eagerly desperate to replicate the magic of the 2023 World Series run, every pitch matters from here on out.
The 2026 season hasn’t exactly been pretty, as many of you know. From injuries to offensive and defensive inconsistencies, it’s been a struggle for the Rangers to stay atop the division and create a gap between the Astros and the Mariners. Although it’s been a struggle, Skip Schumaker somehow finds a way to conjure a lineup with a retooled roster that sometimes leads them to unexpected wins and scoring parties, placing them in the position they’re in right now. Brandon Nimmo, the biggest offseason pickup of the season, has been injected with some much-needed energy into the outfield, especially since a fielding error earlier in the month fueled a flame inside the veteran right fielder that has improved the anemic offense at times. Power hitter Joc Pederson has been an unexpected bat that has supplied some muscle at the top of the batting order, pacing the club with a quiet 22 home runs. One name that stands out as somewhat of a disappointment is Jake Burger, the power-hitting right-handed batter and first baseman, who leads the Texas offense with 68 RBIs, but his all-or-nothing hacks have resulted in a frustrating 124 strikeouts. Down the stretch, if the Rangers end up sneaking their way into the postseason, Burger will have to buckle down on his plate discipline to put that power-hitting to use.
The only consistent bright spot for the Rangers has been secret weapon Jacob Latz. It was unexpected of him to seize the closer role, but 18 saves later, he’s the undisputed all-star anchor of a largely shaky pitching staff. The starting rotation has been somewhat steady, except for Kumar Rocker. Still, the bullpen will have to figure out who’s going to be starting in place of Nathan Eovaldi, who just landed himself on the 15-day injured list this week with right posterior elbow inflammation. Losing a veteran ace in the middle of one of the most important stretches of the season is a gut punch, putting immense and immediate pressure on a rotation that already lacks depth. At the end of the day, the math is simple: Texas is still alive. If the rotation can tread through choppy water without ‘Big Game Nate’, the middle of the order cuts down on strikeouts, and they win head-to-head divisional games, the AL West is theirs for the taking and can pull it right out from under Houston’s feet. If they fade and don’t make the postseason, don’t be surprised if the front office makes some controversial moves in the winter.
