Rangers Returning Forward Named 29th Captain in Franchise History
This New York Ranger has himself a new title, as well as a new letter on his uniform. J.T. Miller has just been announced as the 29th captain in franchise history. Rejoining the Rangers in the middle of last season's chaos, the 32-year-old forward and center reminded fans in MSG that he was deeply missed. Since his return mid-season, Miller went on to earn 13 goals and 22 assists in 32 games played, and fans knew he was special right as he got back on the ice as a Blueshirt. Since arriving back, fans knew this player was seen as a leader from the beginning, but was it the right time? Now that Miller has himself a head start through training camp instead of waiting until opening night, let's look at the journey it's been for this 32-year-old.
Drafted in the first round of 2011, Miller began his career getting exceptionally acquainted with Rangers hockey. Spending the first six years of his career with the Blueshirts, he was a big part of their incredible 2014 finals run. Miller then went on to Tampa for a short while, then Vancouver, where he had several career seasons. With Selke trophy nominations and more, Miller reached the peak of his career, leading to his eventual return to the Big Apple. Holding the alternate captain position with the Canucks for four seasons, there's no one more deserving of the role. It's been an interesting stretch for the Rangers since the departure of their previous captain, so perhaps it was best to name a captain quickly.
The New York Rangers have been without a captain since December 6th, 2024, after a trade that sent Jacob Trouba to Anaheim for defenseman Urho Vaakanainen. Despite fans not being very pleased with Trouba's ability on the ice, the loss of their captain still had a devastating effect as the team went on to miss the postseason. Without much leadership to be found, it makes sense for them to throw that letter on one of these Blueshirts, and who better to wear it? Fans can expect a significant change with alternate captains, as well. With Chris Kreider gone, it seems there's no other option but to put the letter on Vincent Trocheck, a very close friend of their new captain. With a total of 260 goals and 449 assists in 871 career games, J.T. Miller has more than enough qualities to lead this New York team. Let's see if his presence on the ice can bring this Rangers team back to the postseason.
