Ravens Trade 2021 First-Round Pick to Chargers

On October 7th, 2025, the Baltimore Ravens announced a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers that would send edge rusher Odafe Oweh and a future seventh-round pick for Chargers’ safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 pick in the fifth round. This is the second move of the day made by the Ravens, who recently signed former Houston safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to their practice squad. The Ravens are suffering from numerous injuries on both sides of the ball, but mostly on defense. The Ravens are expecting to be without LB Roquan Smith and CB Marlon Humphrey until after the bye week, but hope to get safety Kyle Hamilton back before the Rams come to Baltimore.

Chargers Get: OLB Odafe Oweh and Future Seventh Round Pick

The Chargers are getting a decent pass rusher, who recorded a career-high 10 sacks in 2024, to play opposite and fill in for Khalil Mack while he recovers from a dislocated elbow. Since Oweh is playing on the final year of his contract and is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, the Chargers get to “test-drive” the pass rusher for the remaining three or four months of the season before deciding if they want to keep him in LA. On the other hand, the Chargers had to say goodbye to Alohi Gilman, a 2020 sixth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame who has 22 tackles and three pass deflections through five games in 2025. The Chargers will look to Elijah Molden and Tony Jefferson to replace Gilman in the secondary, assuming the Chargers don’t make another move to get external secondary help.

Ravens Get: S Alohi Gilman and 2026 Fifth Round Pick

The Ravens are undoubtedly in the market for some defensive fill-ins while the incumbent starters recover from injuries. With Hamilton out with a groin injury suffered in practice before the Ravens' loss to Houston, and an Achilles injury to Ar’Darius Washington before training camp even started, the Ravens were turning towards rookie Malaki Starks and Sanoussi Kane, among other depth players, to play in the deep portion of the secondary. Now with Alohi Gilman in the mix, the Ravens get a veteran who has made some plays over the years in LA, recording five interceptions in six years, with limited starts. On the other hand, the Ravens needed pass-rush help even with Oweh on the field, so it is a little surprising to see the Ravens trade someone away at a position that needed help, but there might be a method to the madness. The 2026 Free Agent Frenzy will be rough for the Ravens, as at least 10 stars will test the market in search of Super Bowl opportunities and/or money. Odafe Oweh was one of the stars set to hit the market in March of 2026, but by trading the former first-rounder, the strapped-for-cash Ravens save roughly eight million dollars against the cap, according to Adam Schefter. With zero sacks in 2025 and a combined 23 over the past four seasons, the Ravens were unlikely to retain the Penn State alum. At least with this trade, fire sale or not, the Ravens move up in the draft and gain some veteran experience.
