Real Madrid’s Last La Liga Weekend of the Season

The last week of La Liga will conclude this weekend after 38 rounds of nail-biting excitement, with Barcelona emerging as champions. Real Madrid will play against Real Sociedad on Saturday, May 24th, capping the season with a home game. As the season wraps up, each team is hoping to finish strong. Real Sociedad is in much better shape than Real Madrid, with only three injuries compared to Madrid’s 11, but the Los Blancos bench can hold their own.

The last time these teams went head-to-head, the match ended in a tie after going into overtime. It was Antonio Rüdiger’s late 115th-minute goal that propelled Los Blancos to the win over Real Sociedad, but they hung with each other for the entire match. Before the Copa Del Rey match back in April, Real Madrid had won 22 of its 32 recent matches against Real Sociedad, which could lead to a high-scoring game this time with nothing to lose. Real Madrid can use this game as a chance to give their talented bench players, like Arda Güler, a chance to get on the scoreboard and develop before the end of the season.

Real Sociedad are currently 11th on the La Liga table and could finish within the top 10 if they can pull a win from Real Madrid. However, Mallorca, the current 10th-place team, is playing Rayo Vallecano and may have an easier time remaining ahead of Real Sociedad. Players to watch on Real Sociedad are Mikel Oyarzabal and Sergio Gómez, who have contributed to big plays and created chances. Oyarzabal is the current top scorer for Real Sociedad with nine goals on the season, and Gomez leads the team in assists with five.

This match is Carlo Ancelotti’s last as the head coach of Los Blancos, and it is sure to be emotional as he bids farewell to the Santiago Bernabéu and the players with whom he created such close bonds. He is walking away from club coaching for now, being the only manager to have won five Champions Leagues. As Ancelotti looks to the future of the Brazilian National Team, it is clear he wants to end this era at Real Madrid with a win and walk away knowing he gave it his all. Although this season was tumultuous for Los Blancos in terms of understanding coaching decisions, losing key players due to injury, and uncertainty of the future, finishing second in La Liga isn’t the worst outcome that could have happened.

Real Madrid and Real Sociedad will be sure to close out the season with an interesting match, and hopefully, there will be hustle and grind from both teams. Los Blancos are looking to give Ancelotti a farewell to remember and give recognition to the titles he won. Real Sociedad is attempting to move up to the top 10 and cap their season with a win. La Liga will not be back until August after this weekend's games as players prepare to campaign with their national teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
