Season Over, Future Ahead: What Comes Next in New York’s Crucial Final Stretch

NHL

With the regular season just three weeks away from concluding, teams begin preparing for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As for the Rangers, fans seemed to have accepted their fate long before the new year began. What was clearly a lost season for the Blueshirts became official just last night in their 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. With that loss, the New York Rangers have been eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight season. As tragic as it is, there's nothing to do but move forward and keep building. With 10 games remaining for the Rangers, fans begin to wonder what exactly the team's plan is now that the postseason is a lost cause. As their season concludes, what can the New York Rangers do to move forward?

As many fans have long accepted, the Rangers' focus now shifts completely to the 2026 NHL Draft. The benefits of a season like this are all the potential this upcoming draft has to offer, and New York is in a good spot. It would seem no team has any chance of falling as low as the Vancouver Canucks, so the Rangers must remain on track to land the second-overall pick. However, when it comes to the NHL Draft Lottery, anything can happen, just ask Matthew Shaefer and the New York Islanders. As their position in the upcoming draft remains positive, what can fans expect the lineup to look like in these remaining 10 games?

With no pressure at all anymore for these Rangers, it really doesn't seem fit to have their main stars on the ice anymore. With so few games remaining in the season, it makes sense for the club to go through the motions. With plenty of youngsters playing already, the best option would be to give them as much ice time as you can. As for the veterans, most should probably not even play again this season. For example, it's most likely the best that J.T. Miller doesn't play again this season. With how banged up the captain has been this whole season, there's no point in risking another injury; give him his rest so he can be healthy next season. Then there's Vincent Trocheck, whose trade value is high; it would be horrific for him to sustain an injury in a game that doesn't matter. At the very least, don't put him in the action as much as usual; his trade value must remain as it is if they're to deal with him. So, with their main stars out, what can we expect out of the youngsters?

The Rangers, at long last, have their opportunity to see what these younglings have to offer. No doubt Dylan Garand should start in the net over Igor Shesterkin for most of these remaining games. As for defensemen, youngsters like Matthew Robertson and Vincent Iorio should be given plenty more ice time. Then there's the forwards, Alexis Lafrenière and Gabe Perreault, who have been on quite a surge as of late. Why not give them some time with players like Tye Kartye, Jaroslav Chmelar, or even Brett Berard? Though a few young players didn't make the most of their chances when called up, all that matters now is seeing what the team has to build on for the future. With plenty to move forward with, what's the path looking like for these Rangers?

It seems there's a long road ahead for these Blueshirts before they return to the team they were two years earlier, but this offseason could just be the beginning. If they keep their position in a good place for the 2026 NHL Draft, the future could look bright, but much still needs to be done. If done right, these remaining 10 games could see this team make some major improvements going into next season. While still nowhere near a playoff-contending team, the promise these young players could bring will make this retooling stage well worth it. Is the future still looking dark, or is a beacon of light beginning to form ever so slightly?
