Should Fans Be Concerned About Justin Fields’ Training Camp Struggles?

NFL

In the NFL, a team only goes as far as the quarterback can take them. You can surround them with talent, but if the signal caller can’t cut it in the league, the team isn’t going to go very far. The Jets know this all too well, and have been searching for their star under center for over a decade and a half. When they brought in a former first-round pick in Justin Fields, fans were hoping the team had finally found the answer at the league’s most important position. However, amid reports of Fields having a tough time completing passes in training camp, doubt has already begun to creep into the scarred minds of Jets fans.

Fields has, without a doubt, been struggling recently in camp, but he and head coach Aaron Glenn have both been very adamant that they are not very concerned. When Glenn specifically was asked for his thoughts on the quarterback’s struggles, he immediately took his side. “I don’t [have concern], cause it’s early right now,” said Glenn. “I’m looking to Week One, right? We have a long time until we get to that point and the type of men that we have, I know our men our gonna pick it up and get going. So I’m not worried at all.”

Fields, while aware of his struggles, is also confident that he will improve. Fans also should keep in mind that he is learning a completely new offensive playbook with a brand new coaching staff. While it doesn’t excuse every problem he’s had, it definitely puts a little bit of context into the situation. Fields also has stated that he wants to play in all three preseason games, believing that the live reps against other teams will help him get out of his slump.

Teammates who have been practicing with Fields have also shown no signs of frustration with the quarterback. When asked about him, center Joe Tippman emphatically responded “He’s freakin’ awesome. I mean, he’s done a kickass job, just seeing him back there slinging it.” Tippman is just one of many players who have raved about Fields during camp. It is clear that despite the outside noise, the people in the building are far from concerned about the roadbumps that Fields has been going through.
