Should the 25-26 New York Rangers Pursue the 26-Year-Old Ottawa Captain?

NHL

It's been almost two weeks since the New York Rangers season concluded, and all eyes remain on what's coming on May 5th. The Blueshirts will be back in the spotlight one week from now when the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery commences, hoping to build off a top-five pick and continue their retooling stage. As for the rest of the offseason, the same goal remains: improve their odds of returning to contention. While this offseason looked quite loaded with superstars at the start of the season, extensions were sadly made to prevent this promising offseason from becoming reality. Despite no big stars heading into free agency this offseason, there are still a few young standouts being linked to the Rangers, and there's one that's had their attention for some time now. However, after a brief disappearance in the postseason, is it truly a good idea to continue pursuing the Ottawa captain?

Having just concluded his eighth NHL season, Brady Tkachuk brings a certain kind of grit when he's on the ice. Being a key part of Ottawa's return to the postseason last year after a seven-year drought, the 26-year-old debuted in the Stanley Cup Playoffs quite beautifully. Although going down 0-3 in the series against Toronto, Tkachuk registered four goals and three assists to push the Maple Leafs to Game Six. An impressive first taste for the Senators captain, all eyes then turned to next season. Returning to the postseason for a second consecutive season, Ottawa fans were ecstatic to see how the six-foot-four captain would perform. Sadly for the Senators, their season ended with a first-round sweep against the Carolina Hurricanes, and a portion of the blame shifts to the captain. Not only did the Hurricanes make quick work of Ottawa, but their own captain failed to record a single point in the series. A humiliating performance to end the season off with, but how exactly does this affect him going through the offseason?

No matter if your team gets swept or not, the captain needs to get points, no matter if it's scoring or an assist; they need to get on the board, no matter what. If even the captain fails to register a single point, it's clear something needs to be done. While it may not define the kind of player Tkachuk has been throughout his career, you cannot deny that his price tag may be plummeting after a series like that. His effort on the ice can no doubt help the team compete for a postseason spot, but it seems nowhere near the kind of price some are willing to pay for him. As his value possibly shrinks, could this be an epiphany for the New York Rangers?

Going back all the way to 2024, the Blueshirts have been linked to the Arizona native in a potential trade. Chris Drury may have had his eyes on this forward for some time, but his sudden disappearance in this postseason hopefully helped him reconsider. Holding a full no movement clause, there seems to be no way to move forward with this unless the Blueshirts were to wait until Tkachuk hits free agency in 2028. A trade is still possible, but based on trade rumors, there should really be no conversation about it. One of the biggest names being thrown out in these rumors is Alexis Lafreniere, who's locked in until 2032 with the Blueshirts. If one were to propose this near the beginning of the season, perhaps you'd argue, but with how the 2020 first overall pick finished this season, that decision should be put to rest. Tying his career high of 57 points to end this season, the 24-year-old went on an incredible surge since the departure of Artemi Panarin. If Lafreniere were to keep going up from here, would there really be any point in even thinking about this conversation?

Overall, the former 30-goal scorer may be a productive player, but if one can't do the same when it truly matters, especially as a captain, is there really a point in pursuing him? If the price remains the same for Tkachuk, it may not be the kind of price a retooling team like the Blueshirts can consider, especially if it involves a rising player New York refuses to give up on. The thought of this potential trade may never go away, but the Senators' captain may have a bit to make up for if he's to inspire some confidence in teams looking to acquire him. The Senators' postseason comes to a quick and unfortunate end. Will it at long last put these trade rumors to bed once and for all?
