Should the Bears Worry About Their Star Quarterback?
Quarterback Caleb Williams has become the topic of discussion amongst Chicago Bears fans and the entire NFL. Since he was drafted in 2024 with the first overall pick by the Bears, the media has made Williams a constant topic of discussion. Coming off an average rookie season that saw him throw for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions, he was still talked down by most NFL analysts. Now, with the Bears sitting at 0-2 and coming off a humiliating loss against the Detroit Lions, is Williams a primary concern for Chicago?
Williams has thrown for 417 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in his first two games this season. In comparison to his first two games last year, he has thrown for 150 more yards, three more touchdowns, and one less interception. The improvement has already shown on the stat sheet, but with the Bears getting ruthlessly defeated by the Lions and shut down in the second half offensively by the Vikings, fans in Chicago want to see more. The Bears remain the only team in the NFL to never have a 4,000-yard passer, which has made the fanbase even more restless for good results from the quarterback. While Williams has definitely shown areas that need improvement thus far and a Bears offense that isn’t quite in sync just yet, it shouldn’t be a cause for panic for the fans.
Head coach Ben Johnson is just in his first year of the role, alongside his new quarterback. After all, when Dan Campbell came into Detroit as the brand-new, exciting head coach, they would end their first season 3-13-1. Bears fans may have the right to expect better results now with losing seasons stacking up; however, the process with Johnson as the head coach was always going to take some time. There have been flashes of what Williams could be with Johnson already, with both games they’ve played, starting with touchdown scoring drives. This was an area Chicago struggled with last season, not having any scoring drives with their first possession. Williams has also flashed his growing connection with wide receiver Rome Odunze, who has already tied his number of touchdowns from last season with three. The panic button shouldn’t be pressed yet by Bears fans, and they will learn more about this team tomorrow afternoon against the Dallas Cowboys.
