Should the Cowboys Be Worried About Their Preseason Performance?

NFL

The Dallas Cowboys played their first preseason game of the 2025 season and traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in SoFi Stadium. Coach Brian Schottenheimer and his staff were eager to showcase their work from training camp; however, the game did not unfold as they had anticipated. Joe Milton struggled early in the first half, completing just his first two of six passes for a mere two passing yards. The defense would not be any better, giving up two touchdowns on their first two drives of the game to Stetson Bennett and Co. for the Rams. Both sides of the ball eventually settled in as the game progressed, but should the Cowboys be concerned about anything significant?

In short, no. There are certainly areas where the Cowboys would have preferred improved performance, but this is simply the approach they take during the preseason. In the past three seasons, the Cowboys have recorded a disappointing two wins and seven losses in preseason play. This poor performance is largely because the Cowboys do not play their starters during the preseason, unlike many other teams in the NFL. The defense and offense are composed of players competing for roster spots and starting positions on the team. Additionally, the Cowboys' on-field play scheme during the preseason differs significantly from how they will actually perform in the regular season. Schotteheimer has already stated that the style of defense being played during the preseason will be entirely different from how they will be playing against the Eagles in Week One to open the NFL season.

Despite the Cowboys not showcasing much during the preseason, there are still several aspects to look forward to. A key point of interest is how Milton performs after his disappointing first game against the Rams. Former Texas Longhorn Jaydon Blue, who did not play in yesterday's game, along with Phil Mafah, are two players to watch closely to see what they can contribute to the Cowboys' offense. Additionally, the cornerbacks are a crucial area of focus due to injuries affecting the secondary. Some of these cornerbacks are anticipated to take on larger roles as the season begins. Therefore, those who perform the best during the preseason will be selected to compete against the Eagles in Week One.
