Should the Nets Trade Their Starting Center?

NBA

The Brooklyn Nets are currently in the middle of a rebuild after failing to capitalize on their big three in James Harden, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving. The state they are currently in is developing young talent and flipping their older players for draft picks until they find their future franchise star. The most recent instance of this was when they traded Cameron Johnson for Michael Porter Jr. and a first-round draft pick. The next player up to be flipped is the starting center, Nic Claxton.

Claxton has been a solid player for the Nets; while he may not provide star production, his ability as a reliable role player is noteworthy. He offers reliable interior scoring, consistent rebounding, and his passing ability has improved each year. He's also a competent defender; his strength means he won't get bullied in the paint, and he's quick enough to hold his own against faster big men and forwards. His archetype is that of a traditional center, and his consistent production may make him desirable to many teams. While Claxton would be a great asset to hold onto when the Nets have a roster ready to compete seriously, they haven't found their franchise player yet. By the time they do and develop him, it's likely that Claxton will be past his prime. The value he has now should be capitalized on soon.

With Claxton's value clear, the question to ask is where he should go. The first team to look at is the Boston Celtics. After trading Kristaps Porzingis and losing Al Horford, the Celtics are in desperate need of a big man. Claxton could slide in effortlessly into their starting lineup, and his lack of shooting wouldn't be a problem since Boston has plenty of shooters. Once Jayson Tatum returns, the Celtics would have enough defense and shooting to make another deep playoff run. Speaking of teams with injured stars, the Indiana Pacers are also in need of a center after losing Myles Turner. The Pacers are another team where Claxton's lack of shooting wouldn't be a concern, since they already have enough shooting. Both of these teams would benefit from having Claxton on their roster, and he could be the last piece needed to take them over the hump.
