Sofia Huerta: The NWSL’s “Assist Queen” Leading Seattle’s Playoff Push
Sofia Huerta was recently named by the NWSL, the “Assist Queen” for breaking the “Assist Record”, with 32 assists, now to her name. The defender for the Seattle Reign FC since 2020, Huerta has been known to be a dominant and versatile player on the pitch. Though a defensive player, Huerta connects continuously with her teammates offensively, assisting in crosses toward the opponent's penalty box and providing further opportunities for a goal. Huerta recently told NWSL in an interview that she greatly enjoys creating assist plays because she “can feel like the quarterback, like the creator of the play.”
Earlier this week, Huerta obtained her 32nd assist in Seattle’s match against her previous team, the Houston Dash. Now, in Week 17 of the 2025 NWSL season, many teams are getting riled up, excited for the playoffs to start, but this also means that many teams are equally anxious for what is to come. Huerta’s cross to her teammate Jordyn Huitema was simply incredible. By analyzing the space that Huitema had before her, Huerta passed the ball cleanly over her teammates and opponents' heads, landing perfectly in front of Huitema to head the ball into the back of the net.
With the remainder of the NWSL season, Huerta is proving to future opponents that Seattle wants and will make it to the playoffs. Though this game between Houston ended in a draw, it’s because of Huerta’s assist that Seattle will now have the ability to continue to move toward the playoffs within this year’s season and have a chance at the playoffs. Huerta's legacy has now been secured as an impactful and record-breaking player within the NWSL league, and as she continues to play, her new title and record prove that fans will see more assists and goals to come. As the season heads into its most crucial stage, Huerta’s precision will remain a driving force in Seattle’s pursuit of the playoffs, further cementing her career as one of the NWSL’s most influential defenders.
