Speed Kills: ‘Sonic’ Represents the Future of NFL Running Backs

NFL

The rumors of the death of star running backs have been greatly exaggerated. For years, many have believed that the NFL has evolved into a passing league and that big-time rushers are not as important to team success as they used to be. The former is most certainly true, but that does not mean that running backs have to fall to the wayside. There are few clearer examples of that than Detroit Lions Pro Bowler Jahmyr Gibbs, one of the best in the game today. Three years is all Gibbs has needed to cement himself as a bona fide superstar and arguably the best player on a Detroit team that has surged from the basement to a Super Bowl window. What makes Gibbs truly special, though, similar to other running backs, is that he is not just lethal on the ground, but through the air.

As part of the class of the recruiting class of 2020, Gibbs stayed in his home state of Georgia when he committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He put up 1,979 yards from scrimmage and 13 total touchdowns in his two years there and was named First-team All-ACC and Second-team All-American in 2021. His talent was obvious, and he knew that with more talent around him, he could take it to the next level. In 2022, Gibbs transferred to the Alabama Crimson Tide and had 1,370 yards and 10 touchdowns. With this elevation and a much bigger spotlight on him, NFL scouts thought more highly of him, especially the Lions. They selected Gibbs with the 12th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. This was met with some criticism by analysts, as many believed that in the modern game, running backs should not be taken that highly in the draft, especially since Detroit had just signed David Montgomery that offseason. Little did they know that the best running back duo in the league had just been brought together.

With Montgomery’s power and Gibbs’ speed, their one-two punch was a perfect mix of styles. In three seasons together, “Sonic and Knuckles” combined for over 6,000 rushing yards and 72 touchdowns, more than any other duo in that same span. They boosted Detroit all the way to the NFC Championship in 2023 and the Divisional Round in 2024, so it was clear that their style of play was a winning formula. One of the main ingredients of this formula was Gibbs’ success as a receiving threat. So far, Gibbs has amassed 181 catches for 1,449 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s not the occasional dump-off; he is a legitimate factor that teams have to watch out for every Sunday. However, he is not the only man who can kill teams in both phases of offense.

Many other running backs have shown themselves to have comparable hands to NFL receivers and have had plenty of success with them. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has had an incredible career so far as a rusher and receiver, with his magnum opus being in 2024 when he rushed for over 2,000 yards, won Offensive Player of the Year, and helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX. Just the year prior, Christian McCaffrey had 2,000 yards and also won Offensive Player of the Year, leading the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII. Many others have also established themselves as strong options in the passing game, such as Alvin Kamara on the New Orleans Saints, Bijan Robinson on the Atlanta Falcons, and De’Von Achane of the Miami Dolphins. All of these players’ offenses have exploded thanks to their impacts out of the backfield, and Jahmyr Gibbs is the premier player, leading the way in this new generation.

This does not mean that Gibbs has little left to accomplish, of course. Despite his stellar play, Gibbs has yet to receive any accolades aside from three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. Then again, Gibbs is just 24 years old, so he has plenty of time to become an All-Pro, Offensive Player of the Year, or even an MVP. With him at the helm, the Detroit Lions will have a chance to notch their first-ever Super Bowl appearance and potentially a Lombardi Trophy. In 2026, he will be without “Knuckles” as Montgomery was traded to the Houston Texans, but new acquisition Isiah Pacheco employs a very similar playstyle. Partnered with quarterback Jared Goff, a passer known for efficiency and short strikes rather than risk-taking and long bombs, Gibbs has the perfect field general to get him the ball and let him work in space. The sky is the limit for Jahmyr Gibbs, and whatever he does next will surely leave millions of jaws on the floor.
