Steelers 25-Year-Old O-Lineman Gets to Play His Favorite Side in 2026
Ever since their organized team activities began on May 18th, the Steelers have been experimenting with their offensive line in an effort to maximize player comfort and efficiency. They moved Troy Fautanu to left tackle and Mason McCormick to left guard. They switched Dylan Cook to right tackle and Spencer Anderson to right guard. Zach Frazier remains at center.
Anderson shared his thoughts about his current spot in a post-practice interview. The 25-year-old explained, “I feel more comfortable at right. That’s my home. When I first met the staff, I was asked if I had to pick, because you know, you’re using a lot of the Y and jumbo stuff or whatever you want to call it. I was like, well, I mean if I had a choice, I’d say right guard.”
James Campen, the Steelers’ new offensive line coach, has emphasized the importance of versatility. Anderson recently discussed working with Campen. The 25-year-old said, “Camp’s cool. Obviously, he’s been around for a while. He was in Green Bay for however many years, and obviously he’s coached a lot of All-Pro guys and high-level players, so it’s been good having him being around and just learning some new techniques, different from ones I’ve learned in the past.”
Anderson’s versatility is an asset to the team. Over the course of his collegiate and professional careers, he’s played all five offensive line positions. The Maryland alumnus has also contributed to special teams during his time with the Steelers. Anderson has started in 11 games for the team. The 25-year-old has performed well at every position that he’s played.
Anderson was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He played multiple offensive line positions in college. However, the majority of his final season was spent playing right guard. The 25-year-old concluded his collegiate career by starting in 31 consecutive games. Anderson played in the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl.
While Anderson may see some time playing each position during the offseason, he’ll likely continue playing right guard when the 2026 season begins. Campen is giving everybody a fair chance to compete for a starting role. Having a new coach to learn from and playing in his preferred spot will be advantageous to Anderson. The 25-year-old has a legitimate chance to secure a starting role on the team this year.
