Steelers Name Former Super Bowl Champion 2025 Team MVP
The Steelers voted and chose running back Kenneth Gainwell as their 2025 Most Valuable Player. He signed a one-year deal, just under two million dollars with the team in March. The former Philadelphia RB was initially added for depth. However, his performance this season has surpassed expectations.
Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke about the veteran running back. He remarked, “Kenny's been unbelievable in the passing game, just unbelievable.” He added, “And he’s so dang smart. I was telling him, I wish I played with him for 10 years just because of the kind of player that he is. You just love playing with that guy.”
Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III commented on Gainwell’s playing abilities. He said, “He’s just provided nothing but spark and consistency. What he can do on a football field isn’t a secret anymore. Not that it has been, but I feel like I’ve always been saying from the beginning that he’s one of the best football players I’ve ever played with. It’s just cool that the world can see.”
This season, Gainwell reached a career high in rushing yards, receiving yards, and total touchdowns. He’s amassed 527 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. He’s also had 65 receptions for a total of 422 yards and three touchdowns. Gainwell’s versatility and steady contributions to the team have made him a key member of the Steelers’ offense. The 26-year-old is on track to become the first Steelers running back since 1994 to lead the team in receptions. Former fullback John L. Williams led the 1994 Steelers in receptions with 51. Currently, Gainwell has a six-catch lead on DK Metcalf, who is suspended for the final game of the regular season.
Gainwell is the first Steelers running back to be awarded Team MVP since 2016, when Le’Veon Bell won the award. Additionally, Gainwell is the first player to be named MVP in his first year in black and gold since 1996, when Jerome Bettis received the honor. Gainwell wants to remain with the Steelers. He said, “This experience has been amazing to me. It's definitely something I would love to experience again.” The Steelers will play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. The winner of the game becomes this year’s AFC North champion and secures a playoff spot. Kickoff is at 8:20 p.m. EST, broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
