Steelers New Defensive Line Coach Is Excited to Work with the Unit in 2026

NFL

The Pittsburgh Steelers completely cleared house after the departure of Mike Tomlin following another Wild Card loss. From head coach Mike McCarthy being brought in to individual position groups, Pittsburgh has an entirely new personnel heading into 2026. One of these hires was former NFL defensive tackle Domata Peko, who is now in the Steel City, ready to coach the position he played for 15 years at the highest level. Peko has already shown interest in his unit, especially with some of the younger players he works with. Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, and Gabriel Rubio are all on their rookie contracts, and the former Bengals defensive tackle made sure to bring them along while still leaning on veteran defensive captain Cam Heyward. The 42-year-old defensive line coach stated, “It’s a room that we can probably lead from the front. I’m excited for our guys. We’ve got a good mix of veterans and a couple of young dudes who are just barely scratching the surface and ready to excel this year.” While the Steelers have used their first-round pick on an offensive tackle three out of the past four drafts, Harmon was the one defensive tackle taken in that mix, and showed great promise last season with three sacks and five quarterback hits. Peko is joining a young and hungry Steelers defensive line room.

While playing, Peko started his career in Cincinnati. He played with the Bengals until 2016, when he joined the Denver Broncos. With Heyward drafted by the Steelers in 2011, the two faced off against each other for six seasons, twice a year. The AFC North is already known for its physicality with every single matchup, and with Peko standing six-foot-three and weighing 325 pounds during his playing days, they both dominated the center of the field. This dominance likely led to Peko being hired by McCarthy twice: once in Dallas in 2024 and now again with Pittsburgh ahead of 2026. The Super Bowl XLV winning head coach spoke highly of his coworker, saying, “I always admired him as a player. Coached against him, and then he worked for me in Dallas for a year. He came in as an intern, and we loved him so much that we hired him for the year. We’re excited to give him this opportunity. He’s a great fit for our guys.” This seamless fit extends beyond the coaching staff, as recently signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day noted the added benefit of Peko being a former player, one he had faced off against at the end of his career. Joseph-Day said, “It helps tremendously. He has a ton of experience, Cam has a ton of experience, and I’m in my ninth season. We have a lot of great talent in our room, so it’s a collaborative effort. It’s going to be fun when we put it all together.”

Under a new head coach and defensive coordinator, the black and gold look to rearrange their defense and defensive line to get the best bang for their buck. The young guys will have major roles in this 2026 defensive scheme, and Benton himself will likely be moved around much more than he was in his two previous seasons. His 2025 season was great, but his production could increase in 2026. It’s not just Peko who is excited to work with this Pittsburgh defense, which is the most expensive in the NFL. More than a decade of play in the AFC North guarantees that Peko knows what he’s getting himself into coaching the Steelers defensive line; now he’s just seeing it from a different perspective. He’s mentioned what being a Steeler means to him, saying, “The traditions, the culture, everything they’ve done in the past here, it’s really going to be part of it. I just want to make my mark now that I’m a Steeler.” While nothing can be said yet, the addition of Peko to an already stellar defensive line unit will likely be a perfect situation for both.

Ryan Allman

My name is Ryan Allman, I am 19 years old, and I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I lived for 10 years before moving out near Philadelphia. I was born into a sports family, with my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all playing football, and supporting the Steelers. I was formed from this, and to this day, sports, especially football, mean everything to me. I myself played football throughout high school, where I was a defensive end. Through my never-ending love of sports and pursuit of film and writing, I am excited for this wonderful opportunity from EnforceTheSport.
