Steelers Rookie Named a Training Camp Star

NFL

The Steelers signed Max Hurleman in May, and his performance has been impressive all summer. In the Steelers' preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 9th, Hurleman caught two passes for 29 yards and one touchdown, which he celebrated by doing an impressive backflip. He also recorded a tackle on special teams. The Steelers ended up defeating the Jaguars 31-25. Sports Illustrated’s Jacob Punturi declared Hurleman one of “the five biggest winners of training camp.” Punturi explained, “The most impressive newcomer at Steelers’ training camp has to be undrafted free agent Max Hurleman. He’s fast, can catch the ball, runs clean routes, and can play special teams. Finding a spot on the 53-man roster is going to be a difficult task for Mike Tomlin and his staff, but Hurleman’s camp performance has earned him heavy consideration.”

Hurleman has been a consistent player at training camp. According to Mark Kaboly, Hurleman is always one of the first players on the field. Cornerback Brandin Echols spoke about Hurleman’s work ethic. He said, “I love his work ethic, he comes out here every day willing to work. He accepts criticism and doesn’t take it as people trying to get on him. He looks at it like a get-better moment. I just love how he works.” During training camp, Hurleman’s teammates gave him the nickname Tom Cruise. Hurleman remarked, “I don’t know, maybe some guys think I look like Tom Cruise or operate like him.”

Hurleman spoke about his time at training camp. He said, “I am happy with the body of work I put out there. I am really working my tail off every day just trying to be the best football player I can be. I am looking for ways to help this team win games wherever that may be.” Hurleman’s plays in the preseason as a receiver and on special teams will determine whether or not he makes the Steelers' final roster. His ability to play multiple positions could make him a key addition. Even if he doesn’t make the roster, he could still make the practice squad and be ready if the Steelers need him during the season. The Steelers play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium.
