Steelers Running Back Credits Quarterback Mentorship for Breakout Season

NFL

Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell is having a breakout year. He joined the team in March. He was initially added for depth. However, his performance this season has surpassed expectations.

When Gainwell was asked about the reason for his success this season, his reply was, “Aaron Rodgers.” Gainwell added, “He is trusting me.” When asked to elaborate on what Rodgers trusts, he said, “My hands and just doing the small things is what I’ve been working at.” Since Rodgers took over as the Steelers' quarterback, Gainwell’s usage has increased. He’s been a steady contributor. His versatility and consistent performance have made him a key player for the Steelers’ offense. Gainwell currently leads the team in receptions. This is a milestone that no Steelers running back has reached since the 1994 season. He’s also ranked second in receiving yards for the team.

Gainwell made a 45-yard touchdown catch on Sunday with less than 20 seconds left in the second quarter. It marked his 60th catch of the season. Sports Illustrated’s Jacob Punturi called the play a candidate for Catch of the Year. He recounts, “Gainwell was in one-on-one coverage on the outside, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers lobbed up a pass to the running back. As the Lions defender tangled up with the Steelers’ back, the two fell to the turf. Incredibly, Gainwell maintained concentration on and control of the ball, securing his arm underneath the falling pass. Still untouched, he had the awareness to get up and finish the play for a touchdown.” Gainwell’s touchdown tied the game. The Steelers went on to defeat the Lions 29-24.

This is Gainwell’s fifth season in the NFL. He previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles. This year marks his first season with over 400 yards rushing and over 300 yards receiving. Former Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley considers Gainwell to be the Steelers’ 2025 MVP. Whaley appeared on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday. He said, “When you look at Gainwell, you got a 10-times return on your investment. Right now, things are trending positively for the team. But Gainwell, alone, I think he’s the MVP of the team, ‘cause he’s consistently done it, from Day One.” Gainwell’s versatility, consistency, and ability to step up in critical moments for the team have made him an essential member of the Steelers’ offense.
