Steelers Running Back On Track to Reach Milestone for the First Time Since 1994

NFL

In March, the Steelers signed veteran running back Kenneth Gainwell to a one-year contract. He was initially added for depth; however, his performance this season has surpassed expectations. Through the first 11 weeks, Gainwell has already made 36 receptions. He has fewer receptions than wide receiver DK Metcalf.

At this rate, Gainwell is on track to become the team’s reception leader this season. It’s a milestone that no Steelers running back has reached since the 1994 season. John L. Williams led the team with 51 receptions that year. This would be a rare accomplishment for a career backup.

Gainwell has carried the ball 61 times. He’s amassed 244 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He’s the team’s second-leading receiver behind Metcalf. Gainwell has registered 204 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. He’s also had one forced fumble on special teams.

His playing abilities have been catching the attention of his teammates and coaches. Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike Tomlin spoke about Gainwell after the team defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland in Week Four. Rodgers said, “Kenny G, I mean Kenny Gainwell, obviously if you’re a football fan you know who he is, and you follow his career…When I came here, I knew what kind of player he was. And I tell him all the time; he’s an absolute baller. So, any opportunity he gets, man, Kenny’s been great all year.” Tomlin said, “I also got a great deal of confidence in Kenny Gainwell, and he showed you why. A top-notch competitor and professional. He’s been a great asset to us, man. In the running game and out of the backfield, he’s a football player first.”

Signing Gainwell was a wise choice. He’s emerged as an unexpected star this season. Gainwell’s versatility and consistent performance have made him a key member of the Steelers' offense. Fans and analysts will be paying close attention to him throughout the remainder of the season while he attempts to make franchise history for the first time since 1994.

Gainwell previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles. The team chose him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He tied for the most rushing touchdowns by an Eagles rookie in franchise history. In the 2022 playoffs, Gainwell led the Eagles in both rushing yards and scrimmage yards. His contributions on offense and special teams helped them win Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 40-22.
