Steelers Veteran Wide Receiver Reinstated Ahead of Wild Card Round
On Monday, Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf was officially reinstated and returned to practice. He rejoined the team one day after the Steelers clinched the AFC North title by defeating the Baltimore Ravens 26-24. The team waived cornerback Tre Flowers to make room for their star wide receiver. Metcalf was suspended for two games after he had a physical altercation with a Detroit Lions fan during their Week 16 game at Ford Field. The NFL prohibits suspended players from entering team facilities while they’re suspended.
The Steelers were happy to have Metcalf return. Steelers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling enthusiastically greeted him, saying, “Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.” Metcalf spoke about how it feels to be back with his teammates. He explained, “I’m excited as hell to be back in the building around my teammates, being in meetings, going to practice. All the things that encompass a week of preparation.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided an update on Metcalf during his press conference on Tuesday. Tomlin said, “I think he’s in a great place. He’s happy to be back. He’s happy to be in the tournament. Ready to go to work.” Metcalf has been a key member of the Steelers’ offense this season. He amassed 59 receptions, 850 receiving yards, and six receiving touchdowns. He’s been averaging 14.4 yards per reception.
Metcalf’s reinstatement comes at a crucial time for the team. The veteran wide receiver’s return gives the Steelers a boost as they head into the playoffs. The team hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Hopefully, having Metcalf back will help them finally end their playoff drought. The Steelers will play the Houston Texans in a Wild Card matchup at Acrisure Stadium on Monday, January 12th. The Steelers have a 10-7 record this season. The Texans have a 12-5 record. The Texans have won nine games in a row.
Metcalf shared his thoughts about the upcoming game. He remarked, “Just looking forward to another great matchup against some NFL-caliber players. They got some great edge rushers. They’re one of the top defenses in the league, so looking forward for that challenge.” Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on ABC and ESPN.
