Straka Takes Home His Second Win of 2025

With us not even one week away from the second major of the 2025 season, the tour moved to Philadelphia for the Truist Championship. While the number one player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, didn’t decide to tee it up, the field was still packed with talent, including the likes of Rory McIlroy, Xander Scheuffele, and Justin Thomas. While all three of these dynamites would finish well, the winner would be Sepp Straka. The 32-year-old from Vienna, Austria, captures his fourth tour win with this, including his second win of the year 2025. While a lot of diehard fans know the newcomer, he might surprise people going into the PGA. In golf, a lot of the game is confidence, and it would be hard to find someone besides Rory who has more than him right now.

With this win, Sepp moved to just second in the FedEx rankings this year, but getting there today wasn’t easy. Straka was tied for the lead through 54 holes for the third time this year, battling with Irishman Shane Lowry, who was looking for his first career win on tour. The tournament would come down to the final hole, where Straka led by one shot over Lowry. After perfect tee shots from both players on the long par four, Lowry would gain the advantage, putting his second shot just 20 feet from the pin compared to Straka’s 30-foot attempt. Shane would even have a chance to outright win after Straka rolled his putt past by four feet, but a three-putt bogey from Lowry would end it, giving Straka the win. While JT and Lowry both were close to winning at points on Sunday, Straka held through, capturing his first win at the Truist.

While Lowry did choke, he should still be happy with how his year has gone, as this second-place finish bolted him into the top ten for FedEx rankings for the first time in his career. Thomas should also feel good about his placement as, due to prime scoring conditions, his visit to Philly Cricket's Wissahickon Course for the first time since the opening round, a wet, cold second round, and a windy third preceded him in seeking back-to-back wins after a win at last month's RBC Heritage. Other notable finishes included Xander at minus nine and Rory at minus ten, but this weekend’s headline will always return to Stepp Straka. The 32-year-old who was bound to have a career year on tour due to his iron game has shown up, so don’t be surprised if he captures a major in the coming months. The tour will now move south to the Carolinas for the PGA Championship, which will be hosted by tour landmark Quail Hollow.
