Tempers Flare Between Browns Rookie Tackle and Star Defender at 2026 Training Camp
On a hot, muggy Saturday in Berea, Ohio, 2026, first-round draft pick Spencer Fano and star defensive lineman Jared Verse got into a major brawl. After the two of them collided into each other like two powerful bighorn rams, Verse leveled the experienced Fano to the ground. The two were separated, and the dustup was broken up. However, this is not a new thing for Todd Monken’s squad.
Just two weeks into training camp, multiple fights broke out between members of the offense and defense. Even running back Quinshon Judkins, a guy known more for his physicality in the run game than for his blocking, went viral for laying a major block on fellow Ohio State alumnus Michael Hall that sent Hall cratering into the grass. Monken, who’s no spring chicken at 60 years of age, is known for bringing a certain sense of physicality to his units, and the Browns certainly look like a team that is trying to become physically and mentally tougher. Saturday’s fight between Verse, the main piece Cleveland gained in the Myles Garrett trade, and the Browns' top draft pick from April was a huge surprise to fans-and no doubt the coaching staff.
The two were seen putting in some extra work after practice concluded earlier this week, with the former Florida State Seminole teaching the 21-year-old former Utah Ute how to defend a talented defensive lineman like himself properly. Another clip that shocked fans and NFL pundits alike went viral between these two, and it also happened on Saturday. During a drill in which Fano was protecting for Deshaun Watson, Verse jumped offside. The rookie promptly went into a trolling, celebratory dance, much to Cleveland’s explosive young pass rusher’s disappointment. The clip even made its way to the dreadful sports betting accounts on X, as Polymarket brazenly claimed that the two “despise” one another.
Those accounts and others on social media can say what they want, but this can be spun as a positive for the Browns. This is a team that’s been in an absolute mire over the past two seasons, and having a spat of competitiveness and aggression between two players in rival positions is a sign of good vibes on the team. Monken is going to be expecting a lot out of both Fano and Verse, and to see that they have a lot of fire in their soul this early, it’s sort of inspiring. For all we know, the 25-year-old is trying to be an older brother figure to the young rookie, and his affection is a tough-love type of thing. All in all, Browns fans need not worry that this incident will turn the team’s chemistry upside down.
