Temwa Chawinga Continues to Dominate Another NWSL Season

Temwa Chawinga, Forward for the KC Current, one of the best teams in the league, continues to stand out for another season. Last year, 2024, was Chawinga’s first season and the start of her NWSL career, in which she came out victorious. She is best known for setting an outstanding record of scoring 25 or more goals in a single season. Within that 2024 NWSL season, she scored against every team in the league. Chawinga’s first year in the NWSL started strong, where she not only grew as a player but also attracted the attention of thousands of fans; however, she is only getting started and continues to dominate on the pitch.

Chawinga is originally from Malawi and is still currently playing for their national team. Before playing with the NWSL, Chawinga played with Wuhan Jianghan University FC from 2020 to 2023. There, she created another incredible record, where she scored 83 goals within a total of 84 games played. With her outstanding records, powerful plays, and speed, a legend continues to grow amongst us as Chawinga continues to dominate this season. Though no one can predict if she can beat or match her record, we are only halfway into this current NWSL season, and Chawinga has scored a total of 10 goals and two assists. She is currently ranked the top scorer, tied with Gotham FC’s Esther Gonzalez

Chawinga’s records on paper are incredible, but watching her play is a whole other experience. She is most known for her ability to use her dangerous speed, allowing her to blast past any backline. Her footwork and technique aren’t overzealous; she just knows how to obtain the ball at the right moment and use her speed and open space to her advantage. The majority of her goals have been taken near or outside the 10-yard line, proving her ability to create scoring opportunities even when she is far from the goal.

However, soccer for Chawinga is more than just a game; it's about family. She mentioned in a previous interview that one of her biggest inspirations is her older sister Tabitha Chawinga. Tabitha is a forward for the French Premier League club, OL Lyonnes, and has outstanding records to her name just like her sister. In an interview with SHE Scores Bangers, Chawinga mentioned how their mother didn’t want her older sister to play soccer, “Yet she continued and I followed in her footsteps - when she would go out to play, I’d go with her.”

Temwa Chawinga has already cemented herself as a rising legend. She has proven herself to be one of the most dangerous forwards in the league, but she is more than that. She plays enough with heart and purpose that it allows others to feel inspired. “I feel special to be the first Malawian to play in the NWSL. I’m looking forward to some more players from Malawi coming here,” Chawinga told SHE Scores Bangers. In every match she plays, she continues to inspire thousands with both her heart and her skill. Many are just as excited to continue and watch Chawinga dominate the pitch and the game that is soccer.
