Texas Rangers Players on Thin Ice: Two Former Building Blocks Face a Critical 2026 MLB Season

MLB

The Texas Rangers are all-in on competing this season after hiring a new manager, making blockbuster trades, and adding new players to the roster. Change has clearly become the organization’s approach. Two players who could be impacted by that change are Ezequiel Duran and Josh Jung. Duran and Jung played a major role in bringing the World Series Championship to Arlington in 2023, but there is some concern and questions about whether other players should get more time on the field instead of these two veterans. Jung, 28, when healthy, is an amazing third baseman and a solid bat in the batter's box, but fans haven’t gotten the chance to see the same spark from the 2023 season due to injury. The former all-star has a history of injuries, ranging from thumb and wrist injuries that inhibited him during previous seasons, and even had a slight scare in late February when Jung suffered a grade one adductor strain. This season feels somewhat make-or-break for the presumptive starter, as the Rangers would prefer someone consistent and durable at the hot corner. If his season becomes a worst-case scenario, the Rangers have some depth, with Josh Smith sliding from second to third base, and the fast-rising prospect Cameron Cauley, who has a lot of talent and is having an amazing Spring Training.

Duran, 23, presents a different situation. Known for his versatility, he can play multiple positions across both the infield and outfield, giving the Rangers flexibility. However, his offensive production remains a major concern. In 90 games during the 2025 season, Duran hit .224 without recording a single home run, though he did contribute 11 stolen bases. With the Rangers already struggling offensively at times, his lack of production limited the team’s ability to generate runs; that said, there are signs of improvement. Duran has put together a strong Spring Training, hitting close to .300 and already surpassing last season’s home run total. If he fails to translate that progress into the regular season, the Rangers have alternatives. Sam Haggerty is one player to watch, as the 31-year-old brings similar versatility with experience across the outfield and second base. Haggerty provides speed, reliable contact, and the ability to contribute in multiple roles without becoming a liability. Last season, he appeared in 64 games for Texas, hitting .253 with two home runs and 12 stolen bases. Like Jung, Duran will need to prove himself at the plate to avoid losing playing time or potentially being sent down to the minor league affiliates in Round Rock or Frisco.
