Texas Rangers Visit the City of Brotherly Love for the Second Game of the 2026 MLB Season

MLB

The Texas Rangers will face off against the Philadelphia Phillies back at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday, March 28th, at 3:05 pm CDT in what is shaping up to be a great pitchers' duel. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom of the Rangers and all-star Aaron Nola for the Phillies will be on the mound to start the game. The Rangers are 0-1 to start the season as they lost 5-3 on Thursday, while the Phillies sit at 1-0 following a masterclass of a pitching performance from Cristopher Sanchez, pitching six full innings, and only allowing three hits, complemented by ten strikeouts. This isn’t the first time both teams have faced off during the first week of the season. In 2023, the Rangers played host to the Phillies at Globe Life Field and went home with an 11-7 victory on Opening Day.

For the Rangers, they didn’t have as great a performance as many would expect, as there were lots of swing-and-misses against Sanchez. However, Jake Burger got the scoring party started with a two-run line drive home run in the top of the ninth inning, and we should expect the rest of the lineup to play with a little more fire to get the first win of the season. Some key players who didn’t have the best performances were Spring Training standouts, Wyatt Langford and Josh Smith; both were hitless and are still looking to notch their first of the season. If the Rangers can start by getting on the board early, get the pitch count up early, and get runners on the bases, there is a good chance that they can knock Nola off the mound and continue to put work in against the relievers of the Phillies.

While that’s easier said than done for the Rangers hitters, you can say the same about deGrom on the mound against an extremely talented, veteran batting lineup for the Phillies. Fan-favorites Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and former Ranger Adolis Garcia are just some of the names deGrom has to shut down to begin the game. DeGrom is historically successful against the Phillies, toting a 9-2 record, with a career earned run average of 2.55. The Phillies big three: Turner, Schwarber, and Harper, have had varying success against deGrom in their careers: Harper is hitting .273, Schwarber has a home run against him in the playoffs, while Turner holds a .235 average as well. The five-time all-star starter also has to worry about the rest of the potent lineup, which includes veteran outfielder Brandon Marsh, J.T. Realmuto, and the rising star Bryson Stott.

One of the matchups that’s going to be interesting to watch is seeing two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager go up against the Phillies’ Nola. They’ve faced off in the past in a limited sample, but so far, Seager carries a .400 average in six plate appearances, with two hits and a walk. The Rangers’ shortstop comes in red hot as he notched two hits in Thursday’s loss, while scoring one of the three Ranger runs. It’ll be interesting to see how Nola plays out against this lineup, as last year wasn’t his best, finishing the year with the highest earned run average of his career at 6.01. So, the Rangers have a chance to rattle him early, as the pressure’s going to be on the Phillies’ starter to wipe that from recent history. Another matchup is a classic “best versus the best” with Turner and deGrom going at it once more. In 53 plate appearances and 51 at-bats, Turner has notched 12 hits, a slugging percentage of .353, and one home run, but also has 19 strikeouts. Turner also comes in hot as he mirrored Seager’s two hits on four at-bats.

To cap it off, this game should be a tight one. Both teams are great offensively and defensively, as both rosters are riddled with talent and all-star caliber players. Although that’s the case, it’ll come down to who can start rattling who first. In Spring Training, we’ve seen the Rangers put up over 20 runs in a single game, but we’ve also seen the Phillies have great success in the batter’s box. If one team can create the pressure of base runners first, it’ll be difficult to recover. I believe deGrom has the stuff, the veteran presence, and the experience to get the job done; it’s up to the lineup to give him some scoring relief and allow him to pitch a comfortable game and be as stress-free as possible. The same goes for Nola, as even though he’s got a great group of guys to run up the scoreboard, he has to make sure he’s got to get a good feel for his pitches early, make sure he’s confident in his command on the mound, and to erase that 6.01 earned run average from last year out of his head and put his best game out there.

All in all, I think the Rangers will take this game to even the series 1-1, with a final score of 6-3. Again, I do believe this game will be a tight one as we’ve got an early great pitcher’s duel on our hands. The Rangers will be playing with a little more pep in their step and are hungry to win their first game of the season. It’ll feel even better for new manager Skip Schumaker to get this first win with his new club.
