2026 FireKeepers Casino 400 Could Be a Career-Altering Race for a 37-Year-Old

Shane Van Gisbergen has been making a statement on road courses in the NASCAR Cup Series since his debut in 2023. Since then, he has been the cover boy for NASCAR's road-course trend, with seven road wins in Cup and five in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. His success on ovals from 2023 to 2025 has lacked any significance. However, the 2026 season has seen a massive improvement in ‘SVGs’ oval track performance. With this recent oval success, SVG could soon take home his first win on NASCAR’s signature track style.

In his 2025 Cup Series season, where he won five road course races, the 88 Camaro only scored one top 10 on an oval in a wild race at Kansas. The 37-year-old also failed to finish on the lead lap 18 times and did not finish three times. During the 2026 season, ‘SVG’, now in the 97 car, doubled that number less than halfway through the season. ‘SVG’ is coming off his first top-five on an oval with a fifth-place finish at Nashville and a strong showing in the Coca-Cola 600, ultimately falling to Daniel Suarez. He also contended for the win at Atlanta on February 22nd after spinning twice, where he fell to Tyler Reddick and took home a sixth-place finish. Phoenix, Martinsville, and Texas also saw strong performances from the New Zealander.

The Cup series travels to Michigan on June 7th for the FireKeepers Casino 400. The track has similar aspects to Kansas, where Trackhouse has seen success. Dale Jarrett and Kyle Larson each got their first career wins at Michigan, so the intermediate is not new to successful drivers reaching a milestone. ‘SVG’ pinned qualifying as one of the most important aspects of the weekend, saying, “I think it really shows the importance of qualifying, getting up front, making no mistakes, and you can stay out there all day.” He has proven in 2026 that he is more comfortable when he is toward the front. With a good qualifying position, ‘SVG’ could be in the running for a very strong day on Sunday.

While the driver of the 97 built his NASCAR reputation on road courses, the 2026 season has shown that he is becoming a legitimate threat on ovals as well. In the past couple of weeks, ‘SVG’ has improved his performance on NASCAR's most common track type. If he continues on his current trajectory, the FireKeepers Casino 400 could be the race where the former Supercars champion gets a career-altering accomplishment, his first win on an oval. This would be the next step in making him one of the most complete drivers in the Cup Series for years to come.
