The Canadiens Newest Prospect with International Experience
On Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens signed forward Vinzenz Rohrer to a three-year entry-level contract. The 20-year-old Austrian was selected by the Canadiens in the third round, with the 75th overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft, when he was emerging as a promising young prospect. Since then, Rohrer has continued to develop his game, representing Austria at the IIHF Men’s World Championship and earning recognition along the way. Now, he's ready to earn his place in the NHL.
Before joining the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League, Rohrer spent two seasons with the Ottawa 67’s in the OHL, recording 44 goals and 53 assists in 118 games from 2021 to 2023. His momentum didn’t slow down in Switzerland, where he helped the Lions secure their second consecutive league title this season. Marco Bayer, the team’s head coach, praised Rohrer, saying, “He is a sensational hockey player with incredible intensity.” In his recent regular season with the Lions, Rohrer tallied 25 points over 52 appearances, earning him recognition as Youngster of the Year.
Rohrer has also showcased his skills in the IIHF Men’s World Championships. This year, he represented Austria and collected four goals and six points in eight games. Austria was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Switzerland, which later went on to finish as the runner-up. As Rohrer joins the Canadiens, his international experience could make him a valuable role player on the team.
Rohrer’s continued improvement suggests he could make an immediate impact in the NHL, highlighting the Canadiens’ commitment to developing young talent. Fans are eager to see his grit and determination on the ice, hoping he’ll remain with the Canadiens rather than return to Zürich, where he still has a valid contract. With players like Owen Beck and Oliver Kapanen also in the mix, the Canadiens appear to be building a solid foundation for their bottom six. With Rohrer on the roster, he could play a key role in shaping the team’s success.
