The Clock Is Ticking: What Does Tottenham Hotspur Need to Do to Save Itself from Relegation in 2026?

Time is of the essence. With only five gameweeks of the Premier League remaining, there is only so much teams can do to improve their position in the table. Tottenham has been having a nightmare of a season, with the possibility of relegation looming closer and closer after each game. I have described Tottenham’s downfall as a Shakespearean tragedy more than once, and pointed out how terrible it would be for the team to end up in the Championship League. However, hope is the last thing that is lost. There are still some games left, and with Tottenham standing just one point away from safety, fans can still have faith in their team. Maybe we’ll be surprised.

Tottenham has made an effort to improve its situation, that is for sure. The team has had three different coaches this season, in hopes that one might lift the team up. Truth be told, all these changes seemed to have the opposite effect on the team; they went from 16th place to 18th in the table, and they have remained there for over a week. Roberto De Zerbi has led two games for the Spurs, which have included one loss and one draw. This sounds discouraging, but Igor Tudor’s statistics were objectively much worse: of the five matches he led, he only managed a draw against Liverpool, losing all the other games. If De Zerbi is able to keep up this trend and maybe win a game or two, things will already be better than they are now. Given that the last game was a draw, it looks like things are getting progressively better rather than progressively worse.

To earn the coveted point that they are missing as of now, Tottenham would have to win or draw a match to position itself above West Ham. Unfortunately, the difference does not only depend upon Tottenham; If West Ham draws or wins the next game, the gap would still exist between the two. Tottenham’s next game is against Wolverhampton, the last team on the Premier League table. This game provides an opening for Tottenham to earn three points and position itself above West Ham. The latter’s next games are against Crystal Palace and Everton, two teams that ranked above the Hammers this season, and have higher chances of scoring against them. If the Spurs manage to secure the game against the Wolves, then that will already be an advantage. After that game, Tottenham will be playing against Everton, so it is fundamental to win the match against Wolverhampton.

Of course, Tottenham does not have full control of its position on the table. If West Ham happens to be having a great day, they can turn the scales to their favor. Given the position of the teams each will be playing next, it would not be crazy to say that the Spurs have a chance of consolidating their position outside of the relegation zone. Fans can only hope that De Zerbi will keep going up from where he started, lifting the team from what is probably their worst season in history. Fans can still believe that their favorite team will remain in the Premier League.
