The Cowboys Surprise 25-Year-Old Safety Making a Push for the 53-Man Roster in 2026

NFL

After the 2025 season, when the Dallas Cowboys' secondary was among the worst in recent NFL history, the team began an overhaul of the back end. Dallas signed a new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, a former Eagles secondary coach. They traded up for Caleb Downs in the 2026 NFL Draft, a player who can play safety, nickel, or anywhere he is needed. The Cowboys also made one of their most expensive free-agent signings, Jalen Thompson from the Arizona Cardinals, as their lead free safety. Despite the big-name additions, one name that has stood out in training camp is 25-year-old Julius Wood. His hard work has made him a surprising contender for the Cowboys' 53-man roster in 2026.

Dallas still has questions at safety despite the additions to the secondary. Although the team signed Thompson and drafted Downs in the first round, injuries to recently signed P.J. Locke and Malik Hooker have opened the door, and Woods has stepped through it. The undrafted free agent from 2024 began to show strong play during the Dallas practice scrimmage against the Rams, and he continued to perform well in their first preseason game against Seattle. The 24-year-old safety’s standout quality has been his ability to read the field and get into position at the right time. That feel showed up in the run game, where he dropped into the box and stopped big plays before they happened, as he did against the Seahawks.

It could be difficult for Woods to gain playing time in a secondary that has seemingly gotten better in just one season, but in the NFL anything can happen. The former East Carolina standout is still only a free agent fighting for his spot against players already under contract. Still, by stacking impact plays in practice and delivering when opportunity knocks, he can force the coaching staff’s hand and carve out a role. Christian Parker, in his time in Denver and Philadelphia, turned rather unknown players into household names in the NFL. If Parker can work that same magic on the former ECU playmaker, then before anyone knows it, Woods is no longer a surprise, not only to the Cowboys but also to the NFL.
