The In-Demand Dutch Goalie Who Could Disrupt the 2026 World Cup

Bart Verbruggen is one of the most wanted goalkeepers in Europe. Prominent clubs are after the Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper’s signature in the summer of 2026: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle United. Brighton signed him from Belgian club Anderlecht. The South Coast team identified his talents through their algorithm and data-driven scouting model. Verbruggen has thrived in the Premier League, and his performance caught the eye of his national team as well. The in-demand Dutch goalie is slated to be Brighton’s next big transfer, along with helping the Netherlands national team through the 2026 World Cup during the summer.

The 23-year-old goalie started his senior career at Anderlecht. He was signed in 2020 and switched between the youth team and the senior squad until 2023. He committed to a move to the Premier League in July of 2023, signing a five-year deal with Brighton & Hove Albion. The South Coast club is where the Netherlands native would begin to develop his skills and control of the ball. Under former head coach Roberto De Zerbi, the Dutchman regularly switched goalkeeping duties with Jason Steele throughout his first year at Brighton. For the 2023-24 Premier League season, he made his debut at the Amex Stadium with a loss to West Ham United: 3-1. During this season, Roberto De Zerbi was often questioned about clean sheets and the atypical, random rotations of his goalies throughout the Premier League. However, Verbruggen would keep his first clean sheet in the league with a 5-0 win over Sheffield United. At the same time, he attracted attention from other clubs, namely Barcelona and Chelsea, who already poached Robert Sánchez from Brighton.

It wasn’t until Fabian Hǔrzeler took over the role as head coach in the 2024-2025 season that the six-foot-four goalkeeper would cement the starting position. The Dutch goalie made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls during the German coach’s first season. So far, he has kept 20 clean sheets in the Premier League. His latest being a 3-0 home victory over Chelsea on April 21st of the 2025-26 season. The 23-year-old goalkeeper may have been a young player still gaining experience in the past years, but Brighton picked him to fit their coach’s needs. Both De Zerbi and Hürzeler require a goalie who is good with his feet. Both coaches rely on their keepers’ pinpoint accuracy for long balls. Verbruggen was one of the few goalies in the 2024-25 season who recorded an assist. He assisted Kaoru Mitoma for his wonder goal against Chelsea on February 14th of 2025.

Verbruggen is known not just for his talent on his professional team. Before he signed for Brighton, he was called up for his national team for the first time in March 2023. However, he didn’t officially record his first appearance, or debut, for the Netherlands national team until October 13th of 2023; it was a 1-2 loss against France. He represented his country at UEFA Euro 2024, starting all six of the Netherlands’ matches. This was his first major international tournament. Since the Euros, Verbruggen has been the Netherlands first-choice goalie. His skills could send waves throughout the World Cup, as his shot-stopping abilities will frustrate the Netherlands’ opposition. His accurate long balls will be another threat, giving his team’s strikers and wingers an advantage.

Bart Verbruggen has a bright future ahead of him, as many high-profile clubs are after his signature. He will also head to the World Cup in the summer to represent his country, creating even more excitement about professional clubs signing him during the summer transfer window. Many other sports outlets report that the Dutchman will leave Brighton. Numerous journalists have been calling him the successor to Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid or the replacement for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich. Overall, the Dutch goaltender is an exciting goalie to watch as he prepares to take the Netherlands into the knock-out stages of the World Cup and anticipates playing in the highest level of European competition with a summer transfer move.
