The Lakers May Target the Type of Center They Need in a New Orleans Pelicans Big Man

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers offseason roadmap is beginning, and much of it centers around a need in the franchise for years, which is consistency in the frontcourt. Despite the signing of former first overall pick Deandre Ayton, many of those questions have remained unanswered this season. The Lakers have continued to monitor options that could address their interior defense and rebounding issues, including young big men with league experience and upside. One of the names recently linked to Los Angeles is New Orleans Pelicans big man Yves Missi, a young, athletic center who has drawn attention for his rim protection, length, and developing offensive game. Missi’s physical tools and defensive potential make him an interesting option for a team looking to add long-term stability. What is notable about this approach is that it reflects both an immediate concern for improvement and a longer-term development strategy, one that balances reliable veteran production with the potential for growth and future strength.

This renewed focus on the frontcourt ties into Los Angeles’ broader identity as a team built around star power and competitive grit. Throughout the season, the team has shown elite play, including a hard-fought win over their cross-town rivals that showed their ability to rise to big moments. In the two teams' most recent matchup on February 20th, the Lakers battled to a thrilling victory over the Clippers despite the competition on both sides. The win in that contest truly emphasized the Lakers' resilience and determination to secure every possible advantage in a crowded Western Conference playoff.

As impressive as that win was, it also highlighted why the Lakers continue to hunt for roster upgrades. At times, the team struggled on the glass and in defensive moments that could easily turn against them in a tighter postseason environment. Adding a player like Missi could help address those specific concerns, as his athleticism and shot-blocking ability would provide additional support around the rim and improve second-chance defense. His youth also offers upside that aligns with the Lakers' effort to think beyond just this season. The team's vulnerabilities have fueled the idea that Los Angeles needs greater depth and physical presence inside if it hopes to contend with elite teams deep into the playoffs. Winning a title requires toughness and defensive reliability through all five positions. Such balanced roster construction could be the difference between an inspiring regular season and an actual championship run.

Financially and strategically, this pursuit also makes sense. The Lakers appear to be entertaining options that provide value and flexibility. Several potential offseason targets may be acquired on team-friendly contracts or with trade assets that do not sacrifice the franchise’s future. This approach preserves the Lakers' ability to pursue larger moves if circumstances change while still addressing pressing roster needs. Combining roster additions with the kind of competitiveness on display against the Clippers could help the Lakers build a team that has the depth and resilience for the postseason.
