The Los Angeles Rams Need Sign This Star Free Agent
Amid the beginning of training camp and months removed from the start of the offseason, the Packers completed a greatly anticipated move. On June 9th, the Packers released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. Alexander has been a staple in the Packers' secondary for several years and is now on the open market. It will be a frenzy for his talents.
While immensely successful, he has struggled to stay on the field. He has played just seven games in each of the last two seasons, and with his large contract, the Packers thought it was best to move on. Despite the injuries, the 28-year-old is still producing at a high level. It’s not often that you see a player with immense talent, released at this stage of the offseason. The Rams need to take advantage.
The Rams' current cornerback room is nothing to write home about. The Rams' secondary ranked 11th in pass yards allowed in 2024, yet could still use improvements. Slotting in for either former Jacksonville Jaguar Darious Williams or veteran Ahkello Witherspoon, Alexander would present a massive upgrade. Neither of the two players can take over a game and lock down the opposing team's best receiver like Alexander.
In cohesion with the Rams' young, upstart pass rush, it would be much easier for Alexander to succeed in Los Angeles. With a star cornerback on the roster, the Rams defense would get a whole lot scarier. Defensive coordinator Chris Shula would be a huge advocate for the move as he propels an average defensive infrastructure into a unit to be feared. This is exactly what the Rams need to elevate themselves into true Super Bowl contenders.
Financially, the Rams will have to win the bidding war. There is no doubt that many NFL teams will be vying for his talent, which likely boosts his price. However, with the injuries, many general managers may fear signing him to a lucrative deal. With limited cap space, if the Rams can afford to bring him in, it would be well worth the money.
As each day passes and the former first-round pick from 2018 sits in free agency, the Rams must be on the phone. Do whatever it takes to make Alexander a Ram. They should not pass up such a rare opportunity to sign a cornerback who is still in his prime. Currently on the outside looking in of the championship picture, bringing in a star cornerback could elevate LA to true contention.
