The New York Rangers Future Following a 2026 NHL Draft Lottery Nightmare
As the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs is underway, the bottom teams turned their attention to the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery just last week. Entering with the third-best odds to select first overall, the New York Rangers were hoping to end this disappointing season with a top-three pick. Sadly, the hockey gods had other plans and were quite cruel to the Blueshirts. The first three ping pong balls looked to be in their favor, pushing them up to second-best odds at the first pick. As the final ping pong ball was released, they were all of a sudden leapfrogged by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who now possess the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
To make matters worse, the San Jose Sharks joined in and jumped right past the Rangers at second overall, shifting the Blueshirts two spots back to fifth overall, the worst-case scenario. From the third-best odds to being pushed back to fifth, it was an unfortunate outcome for those searching for a top-three pick. While fifth overall still has the chance of being an impactful player, New York fans still have every right to be disappointed after such a miserable season. As their position is finalized, what does this mean for the New York Rangers future following this lottery nightmare?
The Rangers currently have two first-round picks, with their second coming from the K'Andre Miller trade to Carolina. Their second pick is expected to be in the 23-27 range, but it won't be finalized until after the second round of the postseason. There are other options to explore, though, like using one of those first-round picks in a potential trade. If the Blueshirts want to still pursue Brady Tkachuk, a first-round pick, and a few more pieces, it would certainly get the job done. However, in the likely chance of Alexis Lafreniere, along with a few other pieces, being involved with said trade, the deal may still not seem worth it if the 2020 first overall pick can build off his late-season surge. As their second pick has yet to be finalized, who are the Rangers likely to choose with their fifth overall pick?
There's no doubt that the Penn State left winger Gavin McKenna is most likely to go first overall. Following in the close second seems to be Ivar Stenberg. Just up ahead, defensemen Carson Carels, Daxon Rudolph, and Chase Reid could be in any order. Somewhere in the draft also lies the son of former Ranger Manny Malhotra, Caleb Malhotra, a young center the Rangers could consider, given the likelihood of Vincent Trocheck being traded. Despite his hockey IQ earning some praise, the Blueshirts would need to be quite patient as Malhotra is committed to Boston University for the 26-27 season. Looking more likely in the Blueshirts range also is Keaton Verhoeff, a right-handed defenseman who could very much help the Rangers with one of their biggest issues over the years. As head coach Mike Sullivan explained to the media, one of their goals this offseason is to acquire another solid puck-moving defenseman, one to perhaps follow in the footsteps of Adam Fox. With another solid defenseman to potentially play quarterback on their power play, it could be the first step in fixing this team's defense at last. There's no doubt this is the worst possible outcome for the Rangers at pick number five. Can the Blueshirts still make the best of it?
