‘The Ring General’ vs. SmackDown General Manager: What to Expect at SummerSlam 2026
WWE wraps up its weekend Fanatics Fest in New York City. Today’s edition of the event acted as the kickoff to this year’s SummerSlam, and this year sees the debut of a two-night version of the premium live event. Many angles progressed throughout this weekend, with Madison Square Garden hosting a Saturday Night’s Main Event. Nothing prepared the WWE Universe for a shocking announcement made earlier today.
Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther would interrupt Chief Content Officer and WWE Hall of Famer Triple H while the latter was checking in on the crowd to see how last night’s show went. Gunther would snatch the microphone out of Triple H’s hands before going off on SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis. ‘The Ring General’ asked ‘The Game’ what he was going to do about Aldis and his repeated actions that kept screwing the former World Heavyweight Champion out of regaining his belt. The boss sided with his SmackDown general manager after he said Gunther pushed Aldis too far. The latter would interrupt the boss and come out on the stage to come face to face with his new rival. Things would start tense before ‘The Ring General’ lulled the SmackDown general manager into a false sense of security, kicked him in the groin, and threw hands at him. Aldis would get back up and trade blows before Triple H called security to separate the two and announced they would face each other at this year’s SummerSlam.
This ends the week on a high note that saw matches like Penta versus Chad Gable for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, LA Knight, Solo Sikoa, and Royce Keys versus Jacob Fatu, Jimmy Uso, and Jey Uso in a Six-Man Tag Team Match, and Cody Rhodes versus CM Punk for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship were finalized for this year’s SummerSlam earlier in the week. It also exposes a new side to a person they’ve heard on the mic but not seen yet in the ring. Before his WWE days, Aldis used to go by the name Magnus. ‘The Modern Day Gladiator’ wrestled in promotions like TNA and NWA and would win the top belt in both companies. The multi-time World Heavyweight Champion saw the most success inside the ring in NWA, where he would change his name to Nick Aldis and don the moniker ‘The National Treasure’. His second NWA World Heavyweight Championship reign lasted over 1,000 days.
The interesting thing about Gunther versus Aldis is that both men actually wrestle a somewhat similar style. ‘The Ring General’ has wrestled like an old-school heel by applying a lot of holds, chokes, sneak attacks, unseen illegal blows, and pushing the boundaries of the referees. That’s how ‘The Modern Day Gladiator’ won a majority of his titles in TNA. SmackDown’s general manager was just that: a hard-hitting wrestler who used his power whenever he saw fit and displayed solid wrestling technique. The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion uses a traditional Powerbomb and a Sleeper Hold to get most of his victories, while the two-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion used a Flying Elbow Drop and a Texas Clover Leaf to get most of his wins. Hopefully Aldis has been keeping himself ring-ready for a match like this. Don’t expect the match to be flashy, but it could be a hard-hitting match that mixes ring psychology, chain wrestling, constant power struggles, and unexpected athleticism together.
Expect Gunther to start the match strong with headlocks, wristlocks, and hard-hitting clotheslines and chops. Aldis will start extremely slow as he hasn’t been a full-time wrestler since debuting as SmackDown’s general manager a couple of years ago. ‘The Ring General’ will start to gloat and get cocky. This should give the returning ‘National Treasure’ time to start showcasing his true in-ring capabilities. The former World Heavyweight Champion will be surprised by the offense coming from the former NWA and TNA World Heavyweight Champion. This will cause Gunther to start fighting more dirty and heelish. Aldis could find an opening to set up a flying elbow for a near fall and will apply the Clover Leaf at some point in the match. ‘The Ring General’ will find every way to break the hold, and when the submission is let go, the Sleeper will be applied to SmackDown’s general manager. The struggle might take a long time, and Aldis could find a way to fight out of it once or twice. Gunther will find a way to tire his foe, and when the time is right, he’ll put the returning wrestler to sleep and win at SummerSlam.
