The South Carolina Gamecocks Are Dominating the Men’s 2026 College Baseball Stage

The South Carolina Gamecocks are rising as one of the most dangerous teams in the Southeastern Conference right now. After a rough start to conference play, interim head coach Monte Lee has given this program the right direction at the right time. Thursday night at Founders Park, the Gamecocks defeated Texas 9-1 in an exciting performance, collecting nine runs off one of the most powerful pitching staffs in the country. This victory gave South Carolina its second top five win of the season, with another coming against Arkansas back in March. The Gamecocks are carrying on their momentum heading into the remaining games in the series, and South Carolina will have their chance to compete at their highest level.

A player fueling this momentum is sophomore shortstop KJ Scobey, who has emerged as a productive hitter in the entire Southeastern Conference. Against Texas on Thursday, Scobey went two-for-four with two doubles, making his season total 15 doubles, and leading the conference. He also leads the Gamecocks with 20 RBIs on the year and has a consistent record of coming through in these big moments, including a walk-off double earlier in the season. With his ability to perform under high-leverage situations, Scobey is a player who can single-handedly swing a game in South Carolina’s favor.

Along with Scobey in anchoring the South Carolina lineup is junior infielder Patrick Evans, who delivered a signature performance on Thursday's blowout. Evans went three-for-four with a career-high four RBI, including a two-run triple in the five-run second inning and a two-run home run in the sixth, which put the game completely out of reach. His previous career high in RBI was only three, making his breakout night against one of the nation's top pitching staff even more impressive. The junior infielder is showing the kind of power the opposing pitchers can't ignore, especially with the upcoming game this weekend against Texas.

Looking ahead, the Gamecocks have an opportunity to pull off a series win against the second-ranked team in the nation. Saturday’s finale will feature junior right-hander Amp Phillips, South Carolina’s most reliable starter, who has a 2.68 ERA on the season and has held opponents to a sub-.200 batting average. Phillips has already delivered a shutout performance against Florida and a one-run outing in seven innings against Arkansas, proving he is another valuable player when the stakes are highest. If the Gamecocks can carry their offensive momentum through the rest of this series, their victory will be a defining moment for the rest of their 2026 college baseball campaign. With the other Southeastern Conference programs racing to hold their ground, South Carolina has emerged as a top contender.
