Three Keys for the Bears to Win Their 2026 Season Opener

NFL

Week One of the NFL season is officially here, and the Chicago Bears start the year against the Carolina Panthers. It is a home game for Chicago, but a win will not be easy. Like the Bears, Carolina won its division in 2025 with an 8-9 record. Both teams fell to the Rams in the playoffs, but it was a promising year for each franchise. The Panthers look to build on this and upset the Bears in Week One. If Chicago wants to start 2026 with a win, a few key factors could help.

Keep Caleb Williams Upright

Keeping a quarterback standing is always important, but Chicago needs it more than ever. Kyle Monangai has been dealing with a knee injury for the past few weeks. He has finally returned to practice, but needs to ramp up to be fully ready. D’Andre Swift left practice early on September 3rd, which was later attributed to cramps. He also returned to practice on September 7th. Even with both running backs practicing, they may not be healthy enough for their normal workload. This is where keeping Caleb Williams upright is important.

If the run game can not fully operate, then the Bears will need the passing attack to be sharp. The defense is rough, which could lead to the Panthers scoring a large number of points. Even though Chicago's offensive line looks different, they are still a solid unit. Williams showed promise last year, but needs to build on it. Even though the Bears' star quarterback can make defenders miss, the easiest way to succeed in the pass game will be through a clean pocket. If he struggles this week, then it could be difficult to see the offense scoring enough to keep up with the Panthers.

Keep McMillan in Check

Speaking of the Panthers' offense, no threat is more dangerous than Tetairoa McMillan. The 23-year-old had a strong rookie season, showing why he was a first-round pick. McMillan recorded 70 catches, 1,014 yards, and seven touchdowns. He was one of the biggest reasons for the team's success in the passing game. Carolina has a good rushing attack, but aside from the rookie, the passing attack lacks proven weapons.

The receiving corps looks pretty similar heading into 2026. Their secondary target, Jalen Coker, will look to build on his potential and become a true threat. However, he needs to prove it. Even if the Bears cannot shut down McMillan, limiting his effect would go a long way in securing a win. Chicago has an injured secondary, but it should be enough to go against a young passing attack. The Panthers' star receiver is a massive threat, and if he has a strong game, then it may be even harder for the Bears to keep pace. If they wish to limit the passing game, making the younger targets step up is the best route.

Take Advantage of the Panthers' Tackle Injuries

Another way Chicago can limit the Panthers is by exploiting their offensive-tackle injuries. Ikem Ekwonu is recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon. Taylor Moton was diagnosed with blood clots before training camp and will also be unavailable. This leaves Carolina without two talented linemen. However, they do have two other tackles capable of providing strong play. Rasheed Walker was added in free agency and has proven to be a quality starter with the Packers. The Panthers also selected Monroe Freeling in the first round, and he will look to flash his potential.

It is no secret that the Bears' defense is the team's weakness heading into 2026. Carolina will still have talented players on the offensive line, but it may not be their top group. Neither tackle played with the team last season, meaning they still have to build some in-game chemistry. Chicago needs to take advantage of this. Pressuring Bryce Young will help the injured secondary hold up in coverage. Additionally, penetrating rushing lanes will help limit the damage from a talented backfield. The Bears will not shut down the Panthers offense, but if they limit it, Chicago could do enough to pull away with a win.

Final Analysis

The Panthers are an extremely talented team that is capable of making a run in the playoffs. If Chicago can find a way to pressure Young and limit McMillan, which will not be easy, their defense could be in a solid spot. Meanwhile, the Bears’ offense needs to give Williams a clean pocket as they deal with injuries in the running back room. This should be a close, competitive game, so Chicago has to play at their best to win. Following these three keys could go a long way toward them starting 2026 with a win.
