Three Starting Point Guards The Kings Should Pursue

NBA

After a disappointing finish to the 2025 season, the Sacramento Kings have a significant need heading into the offseason: a starting-caliber point guard. The issue became increasingly apparent down the stretch, as the team struggled with consistency, playmaking, and late-game execution, all areas typically anchored by a strong floor general. New general manager Scott Perry didn’t shy away from the topic either, openly acknowledging the need for an upgrade at the position as the Kings look to take the next step. With a talented core already in place, finding the right point guard could be the missing piece to unlocking this team’s full potential. So, let’s dive into three starting-caliber names the Kings could and should seriously consider targeting this offseason.

Jrue Holiday

One of the most intriguing potential targets for the Kings this offseason is veteran point guard Jrue Holiday. With the Celtics likely needing to offload salary following their championship run, Holiday, who carries a significant contract, could become a trade candidate, especially as Boston looks to maintain long-term flexibility. While a move for Holiday might only be a short-term solution, his style of play makes him a strong fit for what the Kings are trying to build. He brings elite perimeter defense, leadership, and the ability to manage an offense without needing to dominate the ball. These qualities align well with the vision of new head coach Doug Christie and general manager Scott Perry. His presence could also help unlock more of what offensive talents like Zach LaVine and Keegan Murray bring to the table, allowing them to focus on scoring. At the same time, Holiday handles the tougher backcourt matchups. While he's no longer an offensive focal point and his durability may be something to monitor, there's no question he would be a significant upgrade at point guard. A potential trade involving DeMar DeRozan and additional assets could be a creative way to make the numbers work and land Holiday in Sacramento.

Darius Garland

Another strong candidate for the Kings to target this offseason is Darius Garland. With Donovan Mitchell already signed to a long-term extension in Cleveland, the Cavaliers are expected to explore ways to balance their roster better, and that could mean moving Garland, who has often played second fiddle in their crowded backcourt. For Garland, a move to Sacramento could offer the opportunity to truly run his team and operate as the primary floor general, something he hasn’t consistently been able to do since Mitchell’s arrival. Garland’s blend of speed, creativity, and shot-making would instantly boost the Kings' offensive flow, especially alongside scorers like Zach LaVine and Keegan Murray. While his defense remains a concern, the offensive upside and long-term potential make him a compelling fit for what new GM Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie are trying to build. Locked into a deal through 2028, Garland would be a long-term solution at the position, and if the Cavs are willing to part ways, the Kings should be at the front of the line with a firm offer.

Trae Young

Trae Young is arguably the most talented point guard who could become available this offseason, and with a new contract extension looming, trade rumors around him are only intensifying. Young’s offensive skill set is elite. He’s a high-usage playmaker with deep shooting range and the ability to create for himself and his teammates at a high level. However, despite his star power, the fit in Sacramento raises valid concerns. Pairing Young with Zach LaVine would result in a small, defensively vulnerable backcourt, which likely doesn’t align with the vision of new GM Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie, who are expected to prioritize toughness, size, and two-way versatility. Young’s looming extension also adds financial complexity, making any potential move a significant long-term commitment. Unless the Hawks genuinely want LaVine as part of a return package, the fit feels more forced than natural. While Young is the most dynamic and accomplished option on the market, his one-dimensional strengths and the roster-building challenges he brings may not align with what the Kings are trying to construct moving forward.
